Liana Zafran (Farmer Li) - Garden & Sustainability Specialist At AVS, the garden is a “living laboratory” where students cultivate curiosity, awe, and a sense of responsibility for the environment. Over my four years as the Garden Teacher, I’ve seen it remain a peaceful space where students tune into seasonal rhythms. After completing a three-week permaculture course, I incorporated the sustainability design process into lessons for lower school students, aiming to equip them with critical thinking skills essential for addressing future environmental challenges. Projects like growing mushrooms, building homes for native bees, and upcycling materials have sparked excitement, and I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity AVS has offered me to explore, play, and wonder alongside my students as they develop into creative thinkers, innovators, and catalysts for positive change in the world.
