TEACHING AND LEARNING Lagan College encourages each individual to achieve their learning potential and experience success in all its forms be that in academic study, sporting achievement and extra curricular activities. Key Stage 3: Students in Years 8-10 follow a broad and balanced curriculum. We pride ourselves on offering a range of fun and active learning opportunities in and out of the classroom environment including a range of educational visits. Key Stage 4: In Years 11 and 12 students study up to 11 GCSEs including a core programme of GCSE English, Mathematics and R.E. Some students study English Literature and Further Mathematics. Students are then enabled to select other GCSE courses from a varied menu of General and Applied GCSEs and equivalents. Post 16 Studies: The majority of our students continue their academic or vocational studies into Sixth Form. The College has a highly successful record of placing students in universities and colleges in Ireland and the UK, as well as Further Education. A wide range of A-Level and Applied A-Level BTec and CTec courses are available. All students follow a Personal Development and a Careers Education programme inclusive of health education, study skills, careers and work experience.

STRETCHING THE MORE ABLE One of the priorities of the College is to ensure that our more able pupils are stretched to reach their full potential. Specific strategies include: * Providing extension activities in class. * Continually developing and sharing the College’s Learning Resources and e-Learning (ICT) facilities regarding extension activities. * Providing stocks of challenging activities and resources for the more able. * Encouraging independent research as part of homeworks and/or projects. * Giving extra reading material. * Organising external competitions and awards in, for example, the Sporting and business fields, public speaking, quizzes and debates. * Choosing, in exams, a particular module to ensure high achievement for the most able. * Enabling students to sit examinations, such as GCSEs, early. * Promoting Oxbridge entrance. * Promoting Nuffield Bursary. * Providing CEIAG & Work Experience opportunities to broaden a young person’s aspirations. * Providing opportunities with our partners in business, Pinsent Masons, Danske Bank & PWC. * Recognising and celebrating achievements.
