——— wat e r d e s i g n s o u r l i f e ——— Who designs for Water?

Looking at this issue that our team created, I was left with the question of what shapes our taste and style. Is it our surroundings, both natural and architecturally designed spaces, or the people around us that serve as our influencers? Today’s design world offers endless inspiration with technology in sites and apps such as Houzz or Instagram offering accounts solely devoted to images of tile or whatever your heart desires. Those embarking on a home remodel or new construction have no shortage of portfolios of ideas to match any keyword. Through the pages of GPS Living, we are offering one more source of inspiration presenting more tastemakers, both local and celebrity alike. Three of our own design consultants, Alyssa Baratz, Heather DePhillips and Lori Sacca-Crooks, demonstrate their design love and showcase the importance of visiting a local showroom as your best source for trusted products. GPS is now up to 12 showrooms, including our newest GPS showroom in Flemington, NJ and our 2 nd Kohler Signature Store in Eatontown, NJ (right on Route 35 across from Fort Monmouth). The new Kohler Store features the newest additions to the Kohler Konnect offering, a full offering of Ann Sacks tile and the brand-new to the market Kohler Lighting line. But as far as influencers go, we feature the followings and collaborations of such national design celebrities as Michael Voltaggio, Becki Owens and Jeremiah Brent (page 38). The tastes of these designers shape the finishes, color and even technology that we incorporate into the spaces in which we spend most of our daily lives: bathrooms and kitchens. These rooms have also been some of the last rooms to include any sort of technology upgrades. This is all about to change with eco- friendly water heaters and garbage disposals (page 26) and the Kohler Konnect line featured in the flipside of this issue. Change is coming—you just have to look around and listen to those who influence your style.

Throughout history, water has shaped the world we live in - where we gather, what we do on the weekends and what rooms we make room for. So it’s about time we recognize all water does for us, and give it the attention it deserves. moen.com

I love the whole transformation process. The before and after pictures are impressive and amazing. What is your favorite thing about being a designer? Designing is fun , imaginative and expressive. My perfect weekend would consist of being outdoors, running, hiking, sitting lakeside, and spending time with my family.

I am able to recharge, refocus, and be mindful. In order to be surrounded by and find inspiration, I think it’s very important to get outside and enjoy a run, a walk, or just simply a cup of coffee in the park. For me, inspiration is my motivation. What was your most challenging design project? I designed a bathroom for a family with a child newly diagnosed with MS. As devastating as it was for them, they knew they had to make life-changing decisions and the remodel was a priority. The difficult part for me was designing the space to be purposeful boardwalk bathroom that had tile that looked like wood in different colors, and the shower was made out of copper pipe. Each bath required the perfect faucets—it was challenging but also very exciting to try to find the perfect piece. What is your favorite thing about being a designer? Every day is different. The all-dark kitchen is a very forward look, but for most people this translates into trying out the deeper colors on the cabinets and keeping the rest of the kitchen neutral. field and slab sizes as well as trim, for maximum flexibility. The tile is made from 44% pre-consumer recycled content.

A nn Sacks has partnered with parent company, Kohler Co., to create The Crackle Collec- tion by Kohler WasteLAB, an innovative tile series that uses Kohler’s unfired pottery cull as its medium, transforming the waste into a beautiful, handcrafted tile series. The Crackle Collec- tion is one of the initiatives spun from the Kohler Innovation for Good program. Taking its cues from the United Nations Sustain- able Development Goals, Kohler sought out inventive solutions to recycle its factory waste, and true to the company’s heritage, the goal was to produce beautiful and func- tional products. Inspired by her studies in natural sustainability, Theresa Millard, product manager of sustainability and steward- ship, recognized the real potential in taking waste and reutilizing it. “We started looking seriously at the material and found that it was primarily ceramic in composition,” says Millard. “With our research, we were able to identify the real potential of creating a tile from the landfill-bound pottery. After a lot of collective efforts by the team and through some stringent testing to ensure durability and adaptability, we came up with a recycled tile clay body that trans- lated into a beautiful and ecologically thoughtful tile.”

A multi-step process is used to achieve The Crackle Collection by Kohler WasteLAB . After the clay is pressed, WasteLAB artisans hand-cut each tile removing any excess clay around the edges. An interactive glaze is applied, which has a unique composition designed to pool and break over the textured surface during firing. A resulting delicate crackle occurs after the firing that carries across the tile face adding to the dimensional quality and artful visual effect. The Crackle Collection is currently offered in shades of Mahogany, Amber, Emerald, Bone, Turquoise, and Lake.

LOCAVORE

From their famous tur tles to chocolate infused brandy, Kohler Original Recipe Chocolates creates the perfect sweet treat . Dreaming in Chocolate

I n 2003, Herb Kohler, the executive chairman of Kohler Co., decided that the world needed a better turtle, and the chefs at Kohler’s American Club produced over 100 batches of the luscious caramel, chocolate, and pecan concoction. Terrapins have become the foundation for a thriving chocolates business that explores the limitless opportunity in taste with natural raw ingredients. The Terrapins now come in four delicious varieties and the company has continued to diversify its line of chocolates, producing collections that include toffee bark, faceted ganache “gems,” and all sorts of other chocolate delights. In 2016, Kohler Co. produced the first batch of Dark Chocolate Brandy, and its newest offering, Chocolate Mint Brandy. According to the company, the brandy has a heavy milk chocolate nose with hints of nuttiness and strong, fresh mint. The taste has notes of sweet mint up front, along with chocolate, a hint of hazelnut, and a velvety smooth mouthfeel mixed with the crispness of cool peppermint. The brandy is best served neat, over ice, or mixed into unique cocktails, such as The Kohler Alps.

THE KOHLER ALPS

• 2 oz Kohler Chocolate Mint Brandy • ½ oz espresso • Two scoops vanilla ice cream Allow ice cream to soften. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend thoroughly. Serve in a tumbler or martini glass. Garnish with mint leaves and cocoa powder.

MEET THE DESIGNERS

Howwould you describe your personal design style? My design style leans toward a mostly classic, traditional feel. I like timeless style that gives both elegance and comfort to a space. Decorating with antiques, art pieces and symmetry adds a feeling of history to a space. My design also offers a calm feeling through textures and finishes. What inspires you? I take my greatest inspiration from travel. Learning how different cultures integrate their heritage into their interior home design is very impressive, and certainly worth learning. Unique feels of bathrooms in hotels, for example, can inspire ideas for my spaces that I am designing. What has been your favorite design project that you have worked on? One that stands out is a house that I worked on in Beach Haven. The couple was doing a full gut renovation, making a 2-bedroom, 2-bath home into a 4-bedroom, 4-bath home with a guest bathhouse. I helped design all the bathrooms and kitchen with a true beachy feel. I get inspired every time I look at the ocean. In each bathroom we referenced different elements of the beach.

ALYSSA BARATZ PARAMUS

EXPERIENTIAL LUXURY

Have there been any particularly challenging projects? Probably my most challenging designs have been ADA bathroom projects in which I needed to consider the space and my vision, but also the needs of the end user to ensure ease of function in their bathroom. Bringing together the code requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act with my vision for a warm and welcoming feeling is always challenging. What is your favorite thing about being a designer? I have always been drawn to design, and my career choice was also inspired by the opportunity to work with people, on what is typically their greatest asset and expense, their home. I enjoy helping my clients create an environment for their home life that makes them proud. Describe your perfect weekend. A nice, long run then heading to the beach to relax by the ocean. Spending the weekend with my family and friends, and it doesn’t matter if we go out to a fancy dinner, or just stay home together watching football.

The Tailor Customizable Farmhouse Sink from Kohler has a customizable apron that allows you to choose your own material, such as countertop or tile, or from Kohler’s curated apron inserts. This freedom in choice allows you to coordinate with surrounding kitchen materials and designs. Not only can

curated front panel designs that include etched stone, carved stone, and graphic inserts.

The champagne bar by Jim Dove of Dove Design Studio is a luxurious refuge, and emulates an elegant jewel box full of layered texture and colors. The Kohler Briolette vessel sink features unique cut glass that reflects undermounted lighting, giving off glamorous glow. The ultra-modern Karbon articulating faucet in brushed bronze provides contrast.

KOHLER SUPPORTS KIPS BAY DECORATOR SHOWHOUSE FOR A FIFTH YEAR

K ohler Co., a global leader in kitchen and bath, was the exclusive plumbing fixture sponsor of the 2019 Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Seven designers selected the latest from Kohler to help manifest their visions, reflecting Kohler’s Global Perspective of the Year: Experiential Luxury. “We’re truly inspired to see our 2019 Global Perspective come to life at Kips Bay New York,” says Beth Bouck, Kohler’s marketing director. “Each designer has interpreted it beautifully, creating rich and dynamic environments that

indulge the senses through a perfect union of technology, color, pattern, and material.” Here, four designers create the ultimate in experiential luxury in the Upper East Side townhouse chosen for this year’s design event of the year. “We’re thrilled to continue our support of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House both in New York City and Palm Beach,” says Bouck. “Working with a team of such talented designers to support an organization that changes the lives of thousands of youth is an honor.”

The bath, by Damian & Britt Zunino of Studio DB, is a sexy escape and embraces the contrast between a modern aesthetic and old-world glam. The Kohler Artifacts freestanding bath in black plum from the Shadows Collection serves as a focal point, while the Purist bath filler, faucet, showerhead, and accessories in a vibrant rose gold finish add warmth to the space and complement the modern tile in the bath.

The kitchen, by Christopher Peacock of Peacock Designs, is a handsome yet functional space. Peacock kept the design simple, with no singular element commanding attention. The Kohler Purist kitchen faucet and Prolific kitchen sink are clean-lined and understated.
