FROM ROCK TO COUNTRY

MUSIC BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER

When I was freshly out of college, I found out that ZZ Top was playing in Sacramento. A few of my girlfriends and I were talking about the concert, and I couldn’t help but think about how much my dad would love to go if he had the chance. With the concert taking place on Father’s Day, I realized I couldn’t let the opportunity pass. I called Dad up and asked him if he wanted to come down to spend the weekend with me, keeping the concert a surprise. At the time, he was on crutches, but he drove the seven hours down here. He only found out about the concert after he opened his Father’s Day card with the tickets inside. My dad, my roommates, and I headed down to the concert, and because he was on crutches, we got to move to the front row. So Dad sat in the front of a ZZ Top concert on Father’s Day and rocked out the whole time. That Christmas, Dad got us ZZ Top CDs and other ZZ Top merch because he says it’s one of his favorite memories of hanging out with us girls. When it comes to music, I have a lot of great memories with my dad. I remember he would drive around in his truck, blasting his favorite tunes. While I was growing up, both he and my mom would play all kinds of music throughout the day. While my dad preferred rock and country, my mom preferred softer genres, like Whitney Houston’s music. She would turn on her music whenever she got up in the morning and have her own little dance parties throughout the house.

Despite listening to an assortment of music, I always gravitate toward country music, a preference I’m sure was egged on by listening to it every night as I went to sleep. As a kid, I was really into animals, and one year, my parents got me a pot-bellied pig. The pig slept in a box in my room and, in my mind, it could not fall asleep without listening to country music. So every night, we’d fall asleep listening to it. I’m not actually sure if that was true or not, but young me was absolutely convinced. In the sixth grade, I fully realized how much I loved country music. I went with around 10 of my sixth grade friends to see a Trisha Yearwood concert. Hearing her perform live was a great experience, and she inspired in me a love for the genre that I still have today. Over the years, I have integrated other music into my life, but country is always my go-to.

up in Arcata in Humboldt County, which embodied a lot of that country ranch life. Hearing country music always feels like home to me, but it wasn’t the only genre my home town rubbed off on me. Arcata also had a very laid-back and relaxed vibe, and in high school, I got really into reggae music. I went to a ton of reggae concerts, but I never fully embraced the lifestyle that many people might associate with the reggae culture. I just loved the vibe, and the concerts were always so laid-back and cheerful. Music pulls people together and puts you in a great mood. Turn on a song, and pretty soon, you’ll have at least one person singing or dancing along. No matter if you listen to rock, country, or reggae, you can share those moments with the people around you.

SPINAL CORD INJURIES Spinal cord injuries occur when a traumatic event such as a car crash, motorcycle collision, or slip-and-fall causes severe spine damage, resulting in the loss of physical sensation, movement, and range of motion. The spinal cord consists of a column of nerves protected by the bones of your spine, and it is responsible for delivering messages between your brain and the rest of your body. Therefore, an injury to the spinal column can damage or destroy your brain’s ability to communicate with your body. Some of the common spinal injuries include contusion, compression, and spinal fractures. Such injuries could produce side effects including severe depression, emotional trauma, and respiratory problems. Some spinal injuries can even render a victim paralyzed from the waist down (paraplegic) or from the neck down (quadriplegic). Due to the severity of these injuries, they require extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and in many cases, lifetime assistance from a caregiver. Those costs will be astronomical, and spinal injuries will change the lives of victims and their families forever. However, if someone’s negligence caused the spinal cord injury, financial compensation can be recovered from the individual or business. In a spinal cord injury lawsuit, an attorney may be able to help you recover the following damages.

MEDICAL BILLS An injured person can recover money for any medical bills resulting from the injury, including hospital bills, prescription drugs, doctor visits, rehabilitation costs, and any future medical expenses. LOST WAGES Compensation for time spent away from work, as well as a loss of earning capacity, may also be awarded. PAIN AND SUFFERING When an individual suffers a spinal cord injury, they can experience lasting physical and emotional pain. These victims can receive monetary damages for this pain and suffering. WRONGFUL DEATH When a spinal cord injury results in death, the victim’s family may be able to sue the negligent party. In these cases, the family may be eligible for damages based on the pain and suffering of the victim, as well as money to ease the financial burden left by their loved one’s absence. If you or someone you care for faced a severe spine or back injury, contact The Law Office of Black & DePaoli . Our personal injury attorneys have experience handling cases in a variety of areas and are ready to help you recover the compensation you may be entitled to for your spinal cord injury.

3 IDEAS FOR THE ULTIMATE CAMPOUT

RIGHT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

Even though it’s almost peak camping season, you and your family might opt to cancel your out-of-town trip this summer, but don’t worry. Just because you don’t head into the mountains doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy time outdoors with a backyard campout. It might not be your favorite spot in a sprawling national park, but that doesn’t mean you can’t turn backyard camping into the best staycation ever with these ideas and more.

As a bonus, you can keep a firepit around when cooler weather rolls in too. This is far from a comprehensive list of backyard camping activities. That said, these three ideas alone can make for several nights of outdoor entertainment. Why not explore the various ways you can have the best camping experience your backyard has to offer?

CALIFORNIA’S HISTORY AND LEGENDS SOMETHING FUN AND INTERESTING!

Each state across the U.S. has its own unique stories, history, and legends, and California is no different! Our state is filled with remarkable tales ranging from our beginnings to local lore. Take a seat and catch up on three such stories.

Merritt and William Ide led the group and stormed an outpost of Sonoma north of San Francisco. Their wish was to merge California with the rest of the U.S. After arresting the retired Mexican general,

Mariano Vallejo, and his family, the two leaders proclaimed California an independent republic and created a flag to represent themselves. Using a cotton sheet, they painted a grizzly bear and a lone red star with “California Republic” underneath. This flag endured, and once the state joined the Union in 1850, the Bear Flag became its official state flag.

THE ORIGINS OF SUTTER’S FORT From 1840–1841, Sutter’s Fort was built by John Augustus Sutter. Sutter had an interesting life; although born in Germany in 1803, he was raised in Switzerland. In 1939, he became both an American and Mexican citizen and settled in California. After building Sutter’s Fort, and in spite of the debt he was in, Sutter was remarkably hospitable and provided employment to immigrants, trappers, and traders

A CALIFORNIAN LEGEND The Santa Lucia Range runs in Southern California, and it’s along these mountains that the Dark Watchers roam. This local legend is as interesting as it is uncanny. The Dark Watchers are strange humanoid phantoms that can only be seen at twilight, standing in the distance silhouetted against the last remnants of light. It’s said that when spotted, the dark figures will simply vanish without a trace. But be careful — show too much interest in the Dark Watchers, and you might just vanish too.

who came to his fort. Sadly, Sutter is most known for the moment gold was discovered on his land in 1848, which brought about his bankruptcy. Although he moved away to Lititz, Pennsylvania, his fort still stands, and his lands became what we know today as Sacramento. AN OFFICIAL STATE FLAG In 1846, John C. Fremont, an American Army officer and explorer, arrived at Fort Sutter and began to stir rebellion in the hearts of Americans. A group of 33 individuals decided to take action. Ezekiel
