TREASURE

Steadfast supporter of College

T he influence of Christ’s College on the life of Roland Fraser Stead (4711) was profound, so much so that the late nonagenarian made a significant bequest this year. A regular and generous donator to the Annual Appeal, Roland always demonstrated a lively interest in College activities, having been a boarder in Jacobs House from 1937–40. A keen rower, he joined the English Navy when he left school, training on the east coast of England, and was posted to British Navy ships. With demobilisation, he returned to New Zealand and went farming in Rangiora and Amberley for 20 years. When Roland made his bequest to College, he left it to the trustees to decide how best to use it: “They will make the decisions. They’re on the spot and they will know what the school needs at the time.” His gift will be a significant boost for the new Upper West multi-purpose sports centre.
