College – Issue 42

Character strengths – define and develop

S ince 2019, an integral component of our Wellbeing programme has been the vital role of character strengths at Christ’s College. These reflect the true individual, with each boy possessing those strengths in differing degrees to define and develop a unique profile. In turn, College recognises and celebrates a range of boys who demonstrate the best attributes on the path to being the ideal College Graduate.

Matthew Brett – Year 12, Condell’s House Perseverance, Prudence

Matthew is a great example of a College student grabbing all the opportunities on offer – from Drama to sport, academics to Music. He is a drummer in the Big Band, a tenor in the College Choir, a Football player in the 1st XI squad and the Ravens, and a singer in productions. To top off his involvement, he has been awarded a Gold Badge and Tie for his academic efforts. Volleyball is a new passion, playing both for College and as a member of the Canterbury U17 team where he has good friends from many other Christchurch secondary schools. “Being able to do all the things I can at College is really good, working with really good people, having great opportunities and making great friends.”

Max Topham – Year 11, Condell’s House Social Intelligence, Honesty

Max is a sportsman, heavily into Rowing and Rugby. However, he is also the singer in one of the College bands, Rain on Jupiter. From Medbury School, he followed big brother Flynn to College, and adjusted quickly to having different classes each period, and to the House system. He likes being busy, and loves sport, playing as hooker in the 3rd XV Rugby team this season, and being part of the summer Rowing squad. That discipline, and the hard work and effort required, makes him feel good, he says. He also aims to make the top boat by Year 13. His favourite subject is Drama. He was in Fame Jr and performed in the 2022 senior production, Light at the End of the Tunnel .
