College – Issue 42

Hunter Adam – Year 13, Rolleston House Perseverance, Self-regulation

Hunter, who started at College in Year 11, has never looked back. He came in on the Basketball programme and soon capitalised on all the opportunities in that sphere and in every other aspect of College life. Keen on the Sciences – Physics and Chemistry, in particular – Hunter plans to study engineering. However, first up, he will pursue Basketball. He has been in the Junior Tall Blacks since Year 11, and last year won the Most Valuable Player award at the U17 nationals. At College, his more than two-metre frame is influential on court too, with the A team winning the local secondary schools’ competition in 2020 and 2021. Hunter is self-disciplined, and easily manages sport, academics, and a social life.

Ben Breitmeyer – Year 13, Jacobs House Teamwork, Kindness, Humility

It is not easy fitting in when you arrive at College as a Year 11 student, but Ben has managed superbly and is now Head of House. His initial transition from Cashmere High School to College was simplified by Cricket. He had been playing in junior representative teams for years, and already knew some of the boys in Jacobs. It made the change relatively easy, plus the House system meant he had a sound base of Year 11 peers. He loves Physical Education, Geography, and Economics in particular, and has his eye on a future in property valuation or global supply chain networks. Ben says College ensures everyone gets the chance to experience something new. “It’s up to the individual to get involved. That’s the fun part.”

Harry Vaughan – Year 11, Rolleston House Leadership, Hope, Humour

Time flashes by at College, and Harry is intent on being in the moment. The new College Diploma is starting to make sense, he is focused on his schoolwork, and he is especially enjoying Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. He is in the Chapel Choir and Schola Cantorum, and in six songs in the senior production, Light at the End of the Tunnel . He is taking singing lessons and organ lessons, having played the organ at last year’s Junior Prize-giving. Rowing and Hockey are his chosen sports. Harry is enjoying everything and believes the House system is perfect for meeting boys from other year groups. It is a unique means of making connections, he says.
