EXTERNAL EMAIL PILOT FOR AGENTS

As previously reported, HMRC has extended the external email pilot for agents until 31 December 2012. They have also expanded the scope of the pilot to include agent authorisation and employer work. In March 2012, following feedback from agents and in consultation with the representative bodies, HMRC launched an external email pilot to test the benefits of an email channel for agents to contact HMRC. By the end of August, 168 agents had signed up to the pilot – with 82 agents submitting 413 emails. The majority of emails received have been about: setting up and closing Self Assessment records
requests for Self Assessment information chasing Self Assessment repayments requests to change tax codes asking for information about PAYE
In response to feedback from agents involved in the pilot, the trial will now run until 31 December 2012 and the scope has been extended to include: agent authorisation (for example the ability to scan in a signed form 64-8 and email it to HMRC) employer work (for example notification of a PAYE scheme closing) additional topics relating to Self Assessment and PAYE: capital loss claims
loss carry back claims negligible value claims overlap relief/transitional relief/terminal loss income and capital gains during the administration period of an estate statutory instalment arrangements
