The pilot is aimed specifically at 16 to 24-year-olds who have spent less than six months in work since leaving education, and will be trialled in London in a joint initiative between the mayor’s office and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Management of the placements will be contracted out to providers – who are yet to be confirmed – and will include CV writing support, interview advice and job search assistance.

However, previous attempts by the government to make unpaid work experience a condition of receiving state benefits have proved controversial. Employers supporting the DWP’s ‘mandatory work activity’ scheme faced a public backlash and one young welfare claimant took the government to court over her placement. But employment minister Chris Grayling insisted it was important that those with little work history contributed to their community in return for Jobseeker’s Allowance, currently worth £56.25 per week for under-25s.

“Many other countries don’t allow young people to claim any benefits at all until they have made contributions through a job,” he explained.

HIGH INCOME CHILD BENEFIT INCOME TAX CHARGE

From 7 January 2013, any taxpayer with income above £50,000 in a tax year who receives Child Benefit, or whose partner receives Child Benefit, will be liable to incur a new income tax charge. HMRC explains the details. HMRC has published a briefing which explains who will be affected, how the charge will work and how they will administer it, including the information they will provide to customers affected by the changes.
