Alleyn Club Newsletter 2016

Clubs & Societies

As a mark of respect and a fitting legacy, the club has created a new trophy in his honour. Next year OASC team members will compete for the ‘Sturges Shield’. May we aspire to his excellent scores. We say a huge thank you to Kit for his years of dedication and commitment to the club and wish him plenty of exotic holidays to replace those often damp weekends spent lying in a field in Surrey. During the year we shot at Bisley throughout the Spring and Summer. The newly purchased Musgrave rifle proved popular and the scores proved beyond doubt that our previous club rifle was totally worn out. We were also able to purchase two new TenPointNine Principle shooting supports. These allow us to train new members more effectively without the need of costly specialist shooting jackets. Our scores through the year did improve but we are still playing catch up with the other clubs. Our end of year shoot against the Old Albanians was lost for the third year in a row but whilst the dinner in the evening was a pleasant way to end the year it did not make up for the loss. In 2016 we will host the dinner and trust that we will be able to reverse the losing trend. The Old Alleynian Shooting Club is looking for new members in 2016. If you are a complete novice or already have some shooting experience, we are holding open days for anyone interested to try out their skills at full bore target rifle shooting. The club meets at the National Rifle Association ranges at Bisley near Woking. We have all the equipment you need to have a go so please contact the club secretary David Nicholson (59-67) for more information davidn3004 @ gmail.com

In 1963 Kit first went in for the Imperial Meeting and, much to the surprise of the Club, shot through into the Final of the Queen’s Prize. At the beginning of the 1965 season Alan Brebner retired as Captain of the OASC and Kit was persuaded to take his place. In the 1970s Kit joined the Civil Service Rifle Club and shot in their team championships with some success. He also shot with the Gloucestershire County Target Rifle Team and the North London Rifle Club Team. He remained Captain of the OASC for forty years, possibly the longest serving Captain of any OA Sports Club. Towards the end of that time he had been in post since before some of the Club’s younger members had been born. In 2005 he passed the Captaincy to Neil Blaydon (56-62) and took the title of Vice President of the club. He was also awarded the Captain’s medal for enduring services to the team. Now, after almost 60 years participation in the sport, during which time he has fired over 16,000 full-bore rounds, he felt the time had come to hang up his rifle. He reminded us of a conversation he once had with PWM Hall who was an Alleyn’s Old Boy and also a winner of the Queen’s Prize. When asked about his standard of shooting as the years progressed he replied that his best was certainly as good as ever it had been, it’s just that it happened less often. Kit’s best includes an impressive tally of club trophies, winning the Christmas Cup 18 times, the Arnold Averages Cup 7 times, the Stringer Cup 12 times and the Championship handicap 3 times. He is also the proud possessor of 7 Christison spoons.
