18 June - A Holocaust Survivor’s Tale

Comic Relief special edition of Great British Bake Off. The boys learnt about Comic Relief and how they rely on lots of smaller donations. She thanked everyone for all their fundraising efforts in March. Jo happily wandered off to spend the £600 cheque on a nice holiday in the Isle of Wight (or so she said!). 13 October - author Nigel Hinton OA (53-60) visits College

Auschwitz survivor and author Freddie Knoller visited Dulwich College on 18 June to share his extraordinary story with Year 12 students. Freddie recounted how at the age of 17 he was forced to leave his parental home in Vienna when the Nazis had entered Austria in 1938, seeking refuge as an illegal immigrant in Belgium. He was, however, attracted to France, first working as a guide and translator in central Paris (Montmartre), then fighting in the French Resistance, before finally being captured and deported to Auschwitz. Freddie described the horrors of being a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. In his own words there were two choices: ‘give up and within two to three days you would be dead or you could fight to live and try to adjust yourself to the situation’. By choosing the latter, Freddie has been able to share his life’s story – regularly talking in schools, writing two books and returning to Auschwitz as part of a BBC documentary. Despite the grimness of his story, Freddie’s talk was entertaining and showed us a man who clearly loves life and laughter; a character not diminished by hardship or time. 19 June - TV entertainer Jo Brand visits the Junior School

We were delighted to have a visit from Nigel Hinton OA (53-60) talking about his book series Beaver Towers . Nigel entranced the boys with stories of his time at the College – from seeing his old 1A classroom (now a 6W classroom), to the pranks he and his friends played. Talking about his book Nigel inspired the boys about why and how he became a writer and how he sought his inspiration. The boys hung on every word and many bought copies of his book, desperate to start reading the story, they had heard all about. 6 November - Remembrance Assembly

Captain John Scarlett MC (99-04), gave the address to the Middle School at this year’s Remembrance Assembly in the Great Hall. As an officer in the Coldstream Guards, Captain Scarlett was awarded the Military Cross in recognition of his bravery under fire in Afghanistan during an operation in which he was wounded. He spoke movingly about what Remembrance means to him and his family, following which the Master read out the Roll of Honour of the number of OAs who both served and fell in the Armed Forces during both world wars and after. The College’s Act of Remembrance takes place at 11 o’clock on 11 November around the War Memorial.

The Junior School was delighted to welcome TV entertainer Jo Brand to their assembly on 19 June. Jo is an active supporter of Comic Relief and the boys enjoyed watching a short clip of her in action in a
