Campus Works Update

3. The chestnuts of the Avenue have been decaying over the years to a point where they now need to be replaced. After considerable and extensive expert consultation, the decision was taken to replace them as a single project with semi-mature small-leaved limes ( Tilia Cordata Greenspire ), 4-5 metres high. Sadly, the chestnut species is no longer considered viable due to widespread disease. The Avenue was felled over the Easter holidays this year and will be re-planted during the summer. Founder’s Day 2016 will be unique in the history of the College on its present site for being without an avenue of trees parallel to the Barry Buildings. The Clump will be unaffected, as will the avenue of chestnuts which runs alongside the South Circular (Dulwich Common).

We all take great pride in the built environment of the College, and the inspiration it has provided to generations of pupils and faculty. We are also aware that a campus of our size and history is expensive to maintain. We have a long-term Masterplan of projects to restore, enhance and modernise Dulwich College in order to make best use of our space and give our students the best preparation for the future. If you would like to learn more about or support any of these projects, please do contact the Development Office. 1. The War Memorial is being wholly refurbished and restored, including the addition of the names of OAs fallen since World War II. The final piece of work is the relaying of the flagstones and the incorporation of five memorial flagstones commemorating the OA VCs won in WW1, the first two of which will be dedicated on Founder’s Day 2016, (100 years plus one day after the first day of the Somme) with three others to be placed on the centenary of each award.

4. The Barry Buildings require two projects, both essential, extensive and expensive: a) The terracotta on top of the Centre Block is in a fragile condition. It needs renovation and refurbishment. We will use the opportunity of these essential works also to refurbish the North and South Blocks and clean the Barry Buildings ahead of our 400th Anniversary in 2019. These are significant works which will last for some 18 months, due to start in November 2016. b) At the same time, we are beginning a project to restore and refurbish the 40 classrooms in the Barry Buildings, subject to funding. The intention is to decant a department at a time to the green portacabins which will be vacated by Science when The Laboratory is completed. This will allow us to carry out works throughout term time. 5. A Boarding Link : We are awaiting planning approval for a plan to link the Orchard and Old Blew House and build a common room for all 60 boys in both houses, unifying the two buildings as a single boarding house. We expect works to complete by Christmas 2016.

2. The Laboratory is due for completion on 20 June. It will be open for viewing on Founder’s Day, 2 July, and we will complete the move into Phase 2 over the summer, ready for teaching from the start of the Michaelmas Term, when we will also formally open the entire building.
