badly?] And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand , and brought him into Damascus” (Acts 9:3b-8). Blind Saul stayed in Damascus for three days and did not even eat or drink. The Lord spoke to a Christian named Ananias and told him to go to Saul. “And Ananias went his way, and entered into the h o u s e ; and putting his hands on him [Saul] said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou earnest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith [at once] and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened” (Acts 9:17-19a). After Saul (who was also called Paul) met the Lord Jesus, his whole life was changed. Rather than punish ing those who loved the Lord, he spent the rest of his life telling others about the Saviour. The man who had been so certain that he was right be fore he was s a v e d now said like David, “Teach me, thy way, O Lord” (Psa. 27:11). LESSON FOR OCTOBER 20 Paul Begins His Ministry LESSON M ATERIAL: Acts 9:19b-22; 11:25, 26; Gal. 1:17-24. GOLDEN T E X T : "Straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, tnat he is the Son of God" (Acts 9:20). Outline and Exposition L On his way to Damascus, Paul had a vision which convinced him that the claims of Jesus were all true. There fore, instead of arresting the followers of Jesus, he became their friend. Im mediately he began preaching to the Jews that the hated Jesus was their own Messiah, the Christ promised throughout the Old Testament. In so doing he increased in s p i r i t u a l strength, proved his preaching, and confounded those who opposed him, Such a reversal in one who once so bitterly hated the very name of Jesus astounded all who heard him. Such a complete change in the man gave him a wider hearing than he otherwise would have had. H i A t A n t io c h ( A cts 11:25, 26) While Paul tarried in his home city, Tarsus, a remarkable movement in the Gospel began at Antioch, and Bar A t D a m a s c u s . ( A c ts 9:196-22)

nabas was sent from Jerusalem to examine this work. What he saw con vinced him that more help was need ed, and he went to Tarsus to get Paul to come and assist in the work at Antioch. For one year, these two servants of the Lord labored at Antioch with the result that “the disciples were called Christians first, at Antioch.” I believe this name was not given in derision by unbelievers, nor chosen by them selves, but that the expression “called” suggests a Divine origin. III. This passage answers the conten tions of legalists that Paul’s Gospel derives from the Jewish economy and carries with it something of the law. Paul received nothing of what he preached from the law, nor even from the other apostles. He went to Jerusa lem to visit Peter and spent only fif teen days with him. Of the others, he saw only James; even the churches in Judea did not contact him. But his fame had come to these churches in Judea and they gave glory to God for His grace bestowed upon the one-time bitter persecutor of Jesus and His disciples. Points and Problems 1. “ Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus” (Acts 9:19b). The new convert needs Christian fellowship. This principle is beautifully illustrated in Paul’s case. Immediately following his transfor mation the Spirit of God saw that Paul had contact and companionship with Christ’s f o Mo w e r s . Christian workers need to take note of this.
