ants of the Lord reported what they had done, and what God had wrought through their ministry. They had been followed by the prayers of devout be lievers and their report was received with many a word of praise for an swered prayer, as well as for the spread of the Gospel. Would that the church today were sufficiently missionary -minded to have such meetings with returning missionaries, instead of the pitiful handfuls that gather for such a pur pose! Points and Problems 1. "As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said" (Acts 13:2). The situation into which the Holy S p i r i t entered, making known His will, ought to be carefully noted. It was when the church was in a proper devotional and evangelistic attitude that He gave His directions. There is a principle involved here too often overlooked. In order to hear the voice of the Spirit of God, one must have the listening attitude, and a worshipful spirit. Ofttimes the voice of the Spirit cannot be heard above the din of human activity and the tumult of the world. 2. "So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost" (Acts 13:4). Verses one to five reveal a beautiful and suggestive co-operation between the church at Antioch and the Holy Ghost. The church laid hands on Barnabas and Saul and released them for a definite missionary enterprise. But, after all, it was the Holy Spirit who sent them forth. No man can do lod’s.work un less the Spirit calls him. Churches and seminaries cannot make a min ister or a missionary. A man must hear the voice of the Spirit sounding in his soul until his response is, “Woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!” 3. "And John departing from them returned to Jerusalem" (Acts 13:13). Why did John Mark leave the ex pedition? T h i s can only be con jectured. Was it from fear of danger? Did he hesitate to go so far into an unknown territory? We do not know. But from Acts 15:38 it is evident that it was from some cause for which he was to blame. Paul refused to let him accompany him on his next journey. But it is satisfying to know that in his latter years, Paul recognized Mark as “profitable to me for the ministry” (2 Tim. 4:11). There is encouragement in this for most of God’s servants. A man may fail in his service for the Lord and later rise above that failure to prove a success in the ministry. 4. "They rehearsed all that Gad had done with them" (Acts 14:27). This presents one of t h e advantages oi missionary furloughs. It is good for the home churches to hear of the triumphs of missionary endeavor, for it stimulates faith and zeal.
