After a challenging period in their lives, the Vaughan family reflect on their move to a Nuplace home. for the Vaughan family.
The family of Dad Leigh, Mom Jane and daughter Fleur, now aged six, moved to one of the newly built bungalows on the Ketley Bank development in the summer last year. In 2023, the Vaughan’s lives were turned upside down when Fleur suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car. After months of rehabilitation and not knowing what the future would hold for Fleur, now living with a brain injury, Leigh and Jane were finally able to bring their daughter home. “We lived in an old mid-terrace property that we had bought a few years prior to having Fleur”, says Dad Leigh. “We were proud to call it our own, but when Fleur came out of hospital, we soon realised that our home could no longer meet our family needs. “As Fleur needed a specialist bed, it was too big to get upstairs into her bedroom, so the front room was the only place the bed could go. “It meant Fleur only went upstairs when we were able to carry her into the bathroom. “We knew this couldn’t be a long-term solution and that Fleur would need her own space and would eventually be too big for us to carry upstairs. “But we lived like this for two years. Unfortunately selling our home and buying a new one wasn’t an option for us, so it was our occupational therapist at Telford & Wrekin Council, Lucy, who first suggested moving into a rented property with Nuplace. “At first, we were reluctant as we were proud homeowners, but when we realised how a Nuplace property could improve Fleur’s quality of life and ours as a family, we slowly came round to the idea. “With the support of our OT Lucy and Dean in the housing team, we were able to secure the bungalow at the Ketley Bank development.
“Although it was a big upheaval leaving our old home, we know we have done the right thing. Fleur’s got her own bedroom that she loves to play in and it’s great that we’re not camping out in our old front room anymore. “In the months we’ve lived here, we’re already seeing an improvement in Fleur. She’s able to walk a few steps now and everything is so much easier for her to get to now we’re on one level. “We feel settled now, less stressed and more positive for Fleur’s future. The bungalow is our home for life, and we have no ideas or ambitions for moving. “Dean, Lucy and the teams have been brilliant, they have gone above and beyond what we expected and we are extremely grateful.”
“The Vaughan family has faced significant challenges, so it’s wonderful to see them settled in a home they can call their own. Through Nuplace, they now have the stability and security they deserve, and it is already having a positive impact on their lives.”
