Telford and Wrekin taking Centre stage
The ‘go to’ place for live entertainment Creating new performance spaces and facilities gives residents opportunities to enjoy top cultural events and shows on their doorstep. So with the summer reopening of Telford Town Park Amphitheatre and new plans submitted for the upgraded Telford Theatre in Oakengates, Telford is and will be the place to go for live entertainment. Investment in these facilities is all part of the Council’s ambition to make Telford and Wrekin a better place to live, learn, work and through these projects, socialise. Telford Town Park Amphitheatre Telford’s much-loved Amphitheatre in Telford Town Park reopened in July with a vibrant, free opening weekend of performances, marking the start of a summer-long programme of accessible arts and entertainment. The site has been restored to its former glory in Telford Town Park, creating a new outdoor events space for shows, performances and family events. In its heyday, during the 1980s, the amphitheatre located by Randlay Pool in the park off Silkin Way, was a vibrant cultural hub which hosted regular live gigs and performances, before later closing in the 1990s. Now the amphitheatre is back to its best. A fantastic opening weekend was hosted by compere Neil Jackson, which showcased a mix of local talent and popular acts, and there has been a series of other sellout performances since. Investing in Telford and Wrekin Creating a better borough
Telford Theatre One of the most exciting projects is the state-of-the-art Telford Theatre in Oakengates. Demolition of the main theatre hall was completed earlier this year which opened up areas of the site that were previously inaccessible.
This allowed further detailed investigations which have supported new plans for the building design, submitted in the summer, to make it even better. This redevelopment, supported by multi-million-pound funding from Central Government, will deliver an outstanding entertainment facility for the area and reflects the Borough’s ambition and commitment to culture.
