mness, Marilyn celebrated her curvaceous body and thus changed the ideals of beau- ty in the 1950s. She didn’t try to appear fra- gile or tightly controlled. Her beauty came across as natural, warm and self-confident. That’s why she remains a symbol of natu- ral body acceptance and authentic femini- nity to this day. 3. The most iconic dress One scene from the movie The Seven Ye- ar Itch has long since surpassed the film in which it originated. The white pleated dre- ss she wore became a symbol of the entire era, and its aesthetic later even ended up in the pop art works of Andy Warhol. Few faces have come to represent the univer- sal visual language of glamour, vulnerability and fame as hers. 4. Discussing fame and mental health Despite being rarely talked about in public at the time, Marilyn’s life prompted discu- ssion of issues that today dominate con- versations about celebrities: loneliness, anxiety, public pressure and the great di- vide between private persona and public image. Behind her perfect image was a woman striving constantly to find her own peace, which is why she seems much clo- ser to today’s contemporary stars than the icons of her own time. 5. Humanitarianism in action Behind the glamour was a woman who su- pported humanitarian actions and projects linked to children and the socially disadvan- taged. Before she became famous, she worked at a munitions factory during Wor- ld War II, contributing to the U.S. war effort, while she later visited the troops and used her popularity to support humanitarian ini- tiatives. 6. A myth that persists Perhaps the greatest thing she left behind for the world is the fact that she hasn’t di- sappeared from the collective imagination even a century after her birth. Few perso- nalities outgrow the time in which they li- ved to become universal symbols. Marilyn Monroe was precisely that: a combination of professional courage and personal vul- nerability, a woman who managed to chan- ge the rules of the game in the male-domi- nated world of the entertainment industry, but also to leave a message for the genera- tions that followed her that identity doesn’t have to suit the expectations of others. Be- cause some stars remain part of the history of film, while some come to represent the way the whole planet imagines fame.
Ovo je Merlinka ostavila svetu
Neke zvezde ostanu deo istorije filma. A neke postanu način na ko- ji čitava planeta zamišlja slavu. HERE’S WHAT MARILYN LEFT BEHIND FOR THE WORLD 1. No to Hollywood In an era when major Hollywood studios controlled the careers and personas of actresses down to the most minute detail, Marilyn did something unthinkable: in 1955, she left the rigid studio system and foun- ded her own production company. She was seeking more serious roles, greater crea- tive freedom and the right to decide abo- ut her own career. That move opened the door for generations of actresses who later refused to be just “a face on a poster”. 2. Body positivity before the term was coined Far from today’s standards of extreme sli-
