in Welfare Officers ‘on the ground’, as well as gaining further support for its activities and shining a light on aspects of the sport that need focus and improvement. In 2018, Racing Welfare provided support or interventions on a total of 10,518 occasions. The majority of individuals accessed services through Racing’s Support Line. Next came referral from employers, self-referrals and office drop-ins. Consistent with the previous year, physical health was the top presenting issue in 2018, representing 14% of total interventions. Occupational health was a new service introduced in 2018, which immediately became responsible for 13% of interventions. Accidents and injuries remained in the top three interventions, followed

by benefits, careers, housing and mental health issues. The charity’s Welfare team provided direct support to 2,386 people in 2018, which is a year-on-year increase of 13%. Grants totaling £227,428 were issued during the course of the year, which is a 3% increase year-on-year, having seen a 42% increase the year before. Grants are awarded for a range of goods and services to help positively improve an individual’s health and wellbeing. Racing Welfare led the industry’s response to Mental Health Awareness Week; a national campaign organised by the Mental Health Foundation. Charity representatives attended every race meeting held from 13th to 19th May, handing out more than 5,000 green ribbons to all those working on course in a show of solidarity for
