For the artist inside

Language classes: a change of scene and lots of fun, guaranteed!

Whether beginner or expert, fans of arts and crafts always appreciate learning new tech- niques to express themselves through the visual arts. A huge range of choices are open to “crafters”, with all kinds of materials, tools, and themes to explore. Taking an evening class is a great way to improve your skills and broaden your artistic expression. Painting and drawing allow you to be wildly creative or to craft detailed portraits of objects as they are. In painting, acrylics and oils are the most common mediums for realizing landscapes, portraits, still lifes or to create more contemporary and immediate visual experiences. Beginner’s painting classes introduce students to the basics of the colour wheel and brush techniques, as well as shape and form. Advanced classes might involve live models or techniques such as print-making. Along the same lines, photography classes are a great introduction to the concepts of composition, form, and colour. If classes are not your thing, look around for a photogra- phy club, where members exchange ideas and equipment. Portraits and landscapes are among the more classic subjects, while group outings encourage the discovery of new ways to see the world. Mosaic or stained-glass art classes would be a sensible choice for those who love

The start of a new school year is the per- fect time to register for language classes. You might just want the simple pleasure of learning the basics of a language that you’ve been interested in for a long time, or perhaps your work requires you to develop some foreign language skills. If you’re plan- ning a trip abraod, learning the local lan- guage of your destination country will help you to experience your holiday in a much deeper way. Whatever the reason, once you’re equipped with some exercise books, maybe a practice CD, and some enthusias- tic classmates, you’ll be ready to demystify the language of your choice and have a great time into the bargain! If you are already reasonably fluent in a language but would like to refresh your memory, you can be sure that classes of all levels are offered in most areas. For

adventurous folks who like to dive right in, conversation classes offer a learning envi- ronment that is centred on getting people speaking the language, even before they understand some of the grammatical concepts. There is nothing better for developing your “ear”! Immersion classes can be disorienting at first, as teachers only express themselves in the language being taught, but soon you will be able to do the same. Once you’re back home, there is nothing to stop you from perfecting your new lan- guage skills. Do the recommended study- ing, and use the Internet to find more resources that can keep it fresh, such as music in your chosen language or videos. Any teacher would agree that this type of complementary activity can only help in learning a language.

detailed work. Three dimensional arts such as sculpting, pottery, and ceramics allow for the cre- ation of original works of art that are rarely made in the home because of a lack of proper equip- ment. Whatever type of art class you choose, it is a great way to meet people who, like you, want to explore their creativity and express who they are in a new way.
