But not in Clarence-Rockland though Martha McClew, provincial director for the Ontario Terry Fox Foundation, would be more than happy to see it happen here. “We’d really love it,” McClew said during a phone interview Aug. 27. “Clarence-Rock- land is a very warm and welcoming com- munity.” There was a Terry Fox Run last year, or- ganized through the efforts of François Lalonde and his family, in part as a memo-

Rockland | If no one steps forward soon to take charge, there may not be a Terry Fox Run in Rockland this year. In two weeks Canadians all over the world will lace up their runners and stretch their legs as they prepare to go out Sept. 16 and walk, run, rollerblade, or ride a bike or a skateboard in memory of Terry Fox and his dream of a cure for cancer. rial to their mother, Gisèle Lalonde, late wife of former MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde. Because of various personal commit- ments, François Lalonde is not able to orga- nize this year’s Fox Run but he has told the foundation that he would be willing and able to help advise anyone or any group that took on the task. The challenge now for the foundation is to find someone, even if it becomes an eleventh-hour choice. “We feel we can get it going,” McClew said. “We have had runs pulled together in a week.”

The absolute final deadline date for any potential sponsor and organizer for a Terry Fox Run in Clarence-Rockland is the week before Sept. 16 when the official runs take place all across Canada and around the world. Any interested individuals or groups can call Kim Smith, toll-free, at 1-888-836- 9786, or email kim@terryfoxrun.org. School districts organize their own sepa- rate Terry Fox Runs for students, which take place on a different date from the official run. Those runs are not affected by the lack of a sponsor.
