TOLERANCE AND RESPECT Abbey welcomed ‘Open the Book’ this week, continuing to promote world faiths. Open the Book is a Bible Society initiative that began in 1999, and since then thousands of school children have discovered Bible stories, during assembly and collective worship. It's a three-year rolling programme of themed and dramatised storytelling for primary schools. Abbey has welcomed our friends from Warley Methodist Church for many years and, the assembly held, supports our community in promoting tolerance and respect for all. Our children were a credit to our school with their respect, collaboration and contribution to these sessions. FOOTBALL Last Wednesday, a team of Year 1 and 2 footballers had an exciting opportunity to participate in a KS1 football tournament at the WBA Dome. They fully embraced the matches, showcasing their skills, scoring goals and providing support to each other. Throughout the tournament, they won one match, drew one and lost one, but their smiles and enthusiasm never wavered. Additionally, our Year 5 and 6 team competed in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, November 29th, aiming to represent WBA at the National Finals. Abbey got off to a strong start, taking an early lead of 1-0 in their first game, which eventually ended in a 1-1 draw. The team then went on to draw the remaining two games in the group stage. Although it seemed like Abbey might not progress beyond the group stage, an unexpected turn of events led to a dead heat for second place. To determine the winner, a thrilling penalty shootout took place. After three composed penalties, Abbey secured their spot in the Quarter Finals, where they faced a tough opponent - Mesty Croft. Despite putting up a valiant fight, Abbey was ultimately defeated by Mesty Croft, who went on to win the entire tournament. Nonetheless, it was a remarkable effort by our team, and we commend them for their hard work and dedication. Well done to the team!
