CLUBS & SOCIETIES Alleynian Sailing Society
spectacularly by the presence of Chiranga , a 1970’s concrete hulled sailing barge owned by Anthony Lindley (92-00), and part of the Arrow trophy team. Chiranga offered rides to the more experienced boys giving them the opportunity to try their hand at gaff rigged sailing. We visited the usual Solent haunts: The Hamble River, Cowes, Yarmouth, Gosport and the Beaulieu River. I am extremely happy that the week passed without anything other than smiles and enthusiasm. The discipline and focus required by the boys to run the boats safely combined with the freedom and independence we try to give them makes this a unique experience in the school calendar. It is thoroughly enjoyed by all involved.
year by the Royal London Yacht Club. The event was capably organised by the Alleynian Sailing Society’s very own Alastair Capon, Richard Sainsbury and Simon Brown and sailed in Sunsail’s fleet of identical Beneteau First 40’s. This year saw 24 entrants with a number of past winners in the mix. The format remained the same as in previous years – 4 races on Saturday, with no discard, to determine which four boats would go through to the match racing and ultimately compete for the Arrow Trophy on Sunday whilst the remaining competitors fleet race to determine the winner of the Charterhouse Bowl. After the traditional 8am briefing to identify potential ringers and professional sailors, the fleet headed onto the water on Saturday to find a fairly light 6-8 knots from the south west with a strong tide running across the course. With a strategy to sail conservatively to target a top four position at the end of the four race first day, Dulwich posted 8th, 7th, 5th and 5th results, which unfortunately was not quite good enough, leaving us in 5th place overall. Boat handling improved markedly during the course of the day and in general we sailed clean races post good starts but seemed to be a little off the pace in the light winds. The two new boys, Chris Law and Matt Gorvett performed admirably under the pressure of a racing environment. The team bonded further during the course of Saturday night and woke up a little dusty to find better racing conditions, 8-12 knots again
Commodore’s Report Peter Leggett (68-76)
I am happy to say that my first year as Commodore of the Alleynian Sailing Society has seen successes in the two key events run by the society in 2017. Boys Sail Training Week July was my third outing as one of the skippers, but first as Commodore. Five Oceanis 37 boats were chartered from Fairview Sailing and I was joined by four highly experienced skippers, the Hon. Sec. Anthony Frankford (62- 69), Commodore elect Richard Sainsbury (63-72), Alastair Capon (73-80) and Dr John Jennings. First mates saw Richard Byford (67-76) doing an excellent job in his first year with the ASSes with Harry Tinker (02-11), Peter Fosdyke (92-01), Alex Langley (98-03) and Jeremy Baker (53-60) all helping to make the week run smoothly. This year we continued the idea of second mates on the boats and welcomed Ben Taffs (09-16), Chris Law (11-16). Damian King and another new comer, Harry Willetts. With the extra crew gaining experience we hope to have a ready supply of talent to keep us going long into the future. This year we were joined by Nigel Barnwell (52-61) and his wife Isobel with their magnificent Malo 37 sailing yacht, Ruby , who took two extra crew for the week. This allowed us to take a record 22 boys on the rally. The fleet was also swelled
