Alleyn Club Yearbook 2018

Stephen Mayers 1959-2016 On 4 June a special match was played at Dulwich to the memory of Steve Mayers which featured many of the leading OA cricketers of the past 40 years. Steve was one of the outstanding Dulwich College batsmen of the 1970’s and captain in 1977. His total of 769 runs in the Cricketer Cup (1978 to 2000) has only been exceeded by Phil Hulston (74-83) amongst Old Alleynian batsmen, his top score being 125 not out at Whitgift in 1990. In all he made 8,518 runs in 337 League and Cup matches for OAs, his five hundreds being supplemented by a further 50 half-centuries. When OAs graduated into the Second Division of the Surrey Championship in 1988, Steve’s runs, tactical nous as captain and safe hands at slip did more than any other to keep OAs in the division for 14 consecutive seasons. He will be greatly missed.

The reply started well with Josh Lawrence making 56, but following his run out the innings subsided to 215 all out leaving Tonbridge victors by 47 runs. Several of the Dulwich batsmen made solid starts but none was able to make the big score which would have secured the win. The OA side included Alex Rackow (10-15) and Darshan Chohan (09-14) who faced each other in this year’s

University Match. Alex is the first OA Oxford cricket Blue since Bill Mitchell (43-48 deceased) and Ian Coutts (41-52 deceased) in 1952, the year OA Mike Bushby (44-50) also played in the University Match for Cambridge. Congratulations due also to Akil Greenidge (11-15) who made his First Class debut this season for Cambridge MCCU v Notts.
