City of the Northern Lights Located mostly on the island of Tromsø, surrounded by jagged peaks and dramatic fjords, the city on the 69 th parallel north, home to just under 80,000 residents, is one of Europe’s most fascinating spots. Thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stre- am, the climate here is much milder than at similar latitudes in Siberia or Alaska, which has allowed civili- sation to flourish where one would expect to find only a harsh waste- land. Back in the 19 th century, merc- hants, sailors and hunters anchoring here before embarking on gruelling expeditions to Svalbard noticed that the locals had a taste for refined French fashion, theatre and intelle-

ctual debates. That’s how the city earned the nickname “Paris of the North”, a title it still bears today, wi- thout a hint of irony. November is a month of subtle, al- most palpable melancholy in Trom- sø. Before the official start of mør- ketid (polar night), which falls on or around the 21 st of the month, when the sun stops crossing the horizon, the city is bathed in the light of the so-called blue hour. That is the brief period of the day when the light bo- unces off the snow and sea at an acute angle, creating a long, me- smerizing indigo shadow that gi- ves Tromsø a refined, synaesthe- tic atmosphere. While most tourists rush north in the dead of winter, No- vember belongs to those who know how to appreciate this poetic, visu- ally unique transition period.
