TROMSØ AND THE MAGIC OF THE NORTH Tromse i magija severa

Novembar November

New travel opportunities

Nove mogućnosti za putovanja

Dear passengers, As of 14 th December, the city of Tromsø in northern Norway, which is renowned for the spectacular Northern Lights and for the unique landscapes of the Arctic winter, will join our destination network. This marks the culmination of a year during which we’ve successfully launched flights to Santorini, Baku, Toronto, Alicante, Munich, Brač, Tenerife and Seville, as we continue to expand travel opportunities for our passengers. At the same time, we are already looking ahead to 2027, when we will introduce direct flights from Belgrade to Yerevan, Helsinki, Miami, Cluj-Napoca, Chișinău and Menorca. Miami holds a special place among these destinations, as it will be our third destination in the United States and will serve to further strengthen connecti- vity between our region and North America. The expansion of our destination network is accompanied by fleet development. We will replace two of our Airbus A319 aircraft with larger A320 aircraft, each with 180 seats, while our regional fleet will be strengthened with an additional Embraer E195, equi- pped with 118 seats. These investments will enable us to improve operational efficiency and deliver an even better travel experience. We are particularly pleased that Belgrade will host the Wings of Change Europe conference on 26 th and 27 th October 2027, re- presenting one of the European aviation industry’s most important gatherings. The International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) de- cision to hold this event in Belgrade, with Air Serbia and the City of Belgrade as hosts, recognises not only our company’s standing, but also Serbia’s growing importance in European and global aviation. The results we achieve don’t belong to our company alone. They demonstrate the trust you place in us every day by choosing Air Serbia for your travels. Thank you for being part of our growth and development. Welcome aboard Air Serbia!

Dragi putnici, Od 14. decembra našoj mreži destinaci- ja pridružiće se Tromse, grad na severu Norveš- ke poznat po veličanstvenoj polarnoj svetlosti i jedinstvenim pejzažima arktičke zime. Time zao- kružujemo godinu u kojoj smo uspešno pokrenu- li letove do Santorinija, Bakua, Toronta, Alikantea, Minhena, Brača, Tenerifa i Sevilje, nastavljajući da širimo mogućnosti putovanja za naše putnike. Istovremeno, već gledamo u budućnost. To- kom 2027. godine uspostavićemo direktne linije iz Beograda do Jerevana, Helsinkija, Majamija, Klu- ža-Napoke, Kišinjeva i Menorke. Posebno mesto među njima zauzima Majami, koji će postati naša treća destinacija u Sjedinjenim Američkim Država- ma i dodatno ojačati povezanost regiona sa Sever- nom Amerikom. Rast mreže destinacija prati i razvoj flote.

Le- tovi do Helsinkija predstavljaju važan korak u daljem razvoju mreže ka skan- dinavskim tržištima i obavljaće se tri pu- ta nedeljno. Širenje regionalne mreže biće nastav- ljeno i uspostavljanjem direktnih letova do Kluža-Napoke.

Menorka ujedno predstavlja devetu destinaciju Er Srbije u Španiji. Dalji razvoj mreže pratiće i proširenje flote. Tokom 2027. godine dva aviona tipa „erbus A319“ biće zamenjena avi- onima tipa „erbus A320“ većeg kapa- citeta, sa 180 sedišta, dok će flota za kratkolinijski i srednjelinijski saobraćaj biti dodatno ojačana novim avionom ti- pa „embraer E195“ sa 118 sedišta.

MIAMI TO BE INCLUDED AIR SERBIA TO ADD SIX NEW DESTINATIONS IN 2027 During the coming summer season, passengers will be able to fly directly from Belgrade to Yerevan, Helsinki, Miami, Cluj- Napoca, Chișinău and Menorca A ir Serbia launched sales in mid-Octo- ber for six new destinations that will be introduced over the course of 2027. “We are continuously improving our network of destinations to offer passengers greater choice and even better connectivity. The la- unch of new routes is part of our strategy for sustainable growth, developing transfer traf- fic and further positioning Belgrade as one of the leading aviation hubs in this part of Eu- rope. We are particularly pleased to be in- troducing flights to Miami, representing Air Serbia’s third destination in the United Sta- tes, which we expect to attract considerable interest among passengers in Serbia, as well as those from the region travelling to North America via Belgrade. In addition to launc- hing flights to six new destinations, in 2027 we also plan to increase traffic frequency. Further network growth will be accompa- nied by fleet expansion, providing additional capacity to support the continued develop-

ment of the company and improve conne- ctivity for passengers across our network. The inclusion of new routes is part of Air Ser- bia’s broader network development ahead of EXPO 2027, which is expected to gene- rate additional growth in international traffic and increased demand for flights to Belgra- de,” said Air Serbia CEO Jiří Marek. Among the new services will be one conne- cting Belgrade and the Armenian capital of Yerevan, with the inaugural flight scheduled for 28 th March 2027. Air Serbia will initially operate three flights a week along this rou- te, increasing the frequency to four weekly flights from mid-June. The launch of Yerevan services marks a natural continuation of the company’s expansion in the Caucasus re- gion, following the successful introduction of flights to Tbilisi and Baku. Air Serbia will also resume direct flights between Belgrade and Helsinki as of 1 st April 2027. Serbia’s national airline previously ope- rated flights to the Finnish capital in 2019, but services were subsequently suspended due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Helsinki’s reinclusion in the network repre-

sents an important step in the further de- velopment of services to Nordic markets, with flights operating three times a week. One of the most significant projects in Air Serbia’s further network development is the introduction of direct flights to Miami. Sc- heduled to launch on 20 th May 2027, flights along this route will operate twice a week. As the company’s third U.S. destination – alongside New York and Chicago – Mia- mi represents a major milestone in the de- velopment of Air Serbia’s intercontinental network. It will further strengthen connecti- vity between the region and North Ameri- ca, while also improving connections and travel opportunities to Latin America and the Caribbean. The expansion of the airline’s regional network will continue with the introduction of direct flights to Cluj-Napoca. Air Serbia’s second destination in Romania, after Bucha- rest, will be connected to Belgrade as of 31 st May 2027, with four flights a week. This route is expected to attract a significant number of transfer passengers and further strengthen Belgrade’s role as a regional aviation hub. Di-

rect flights to the largest city in Transylvania, which is an economic, academic and cultu- ral centre of the region, will also make it ea- sier and quicker for passengers from Serbia to discover the city’s rich historical herita- ge, distinctive culture and natural beauty. Air Serbia will also launch four direct flights a week to the Moldovan capital of Chișinău from 3 rd June 2027. Apart from strengthening economic ties between the two countries, direct flights between the capitals will also provide easier access to new tourism and business opportunities, while further impro- ving Moldova’s connectivity with the many destinations across Air Serbia’s network. At the peak of the summer holiday season, from 16 th June 2027, the network of Serbia’s national airline will also be joined Menorca, one of the most popular summer destina- tions in the Balearic Islands. Air Serbia wi- ll operate flights to this Spanish destination twice a week, offering passengers from Ser- bia and the wider region another attractive option for Mediterranean holidays. Menor- ca will also become Air Serbia’s ninth desti- nation in Spain. This further network development will be ac- companied by fleet expansion. During 2027, two Airbus A319 aircraft will be replaced by higher-capacity Airbus A320 aircraft with 180 seats, while the fleet serving short- and medium-haul routes will be further strengt- hened with the addition of an Embraer E195 aircraft equipped with 118 seats.

pozorišta i intelektualnih debata.

tom.

City of the Northern Lights Located mostly on the island of Tromsø, surrounded by jagged peaks and dramatic fjords, the city on the 69 th parallel north, home to just under 80,000 residents, is one of Europe’s most fascinating spots. Thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stre- am, the climate here is much milder than at similar latitudes in Siberia or Alaska, which has allowed civili- sation to flourish where one would expect to find only a harsh waste- land. Back in the 19 th century, merc- hants, sailors and hunters anchoring here before embarking on gruelling expeditions to Svalbard noticed that the locals had a taste for refined French fashion, theatre and intelle-

ctual debates. That’s how the city earned the nickname “Paris of the North”, a title it still bears today, wi- thout a hint of irony. November is a month of subtle, al- most palpable melancholy in Trom- sø. Before the official start of mør- ketid (polar night), which falls on or around the 21 st of the month, when the sun stops crossing the horizon, the city is bathed in the light of the so-called blue hour. That is the brief period of the day when the light bo- unces off the snow and sea at an acute angle, creating a long, me- smerizing indigo shadow that gi- ves Tromsø a refined, synaesthe- tic atmosphere. While most tourists rush north in the dead of winter, No- vember belongs to those who know how to appreciate this poetic, visu- ally unique transition period.

potrazi za skloništem, a za njima dolazili naj - veći predatori okeana – orke (kitovi ubice) i grbavi kitovi. Mali, be - šumni hibridni brodovi vode vas pravo u epi - centar ovog lova koji se doduše poslednjih go - dina preselio oko Sk - jervoja i Kvenangena. Najstariji aktivni bioskop u severnoj Evropi, čuva autentični duh i arhitekturu prošlih vremena The oldest active cinema in Northern Europe preserves the authentic spirit and architecture of bygone times

Architecture of ice and faith If Tromsø has its own visual signa- ture, that is undoubtedly the Arctic Cathedral. Located on the mainland part of the city, in the valley neighbo- urhood of Tromsdalen, it can be rea- ched by crossing the elegant arched bridge that connects the area to the adjacent island. Constructed in 1965, based on the design of architect Jan Inge Hovig, this building isn’t only a place of worship, but a monumental study of Arctic modernism. Its stru- cture consists of eleven massive alu- minium-clad concrete triangles that extend skywards and visually resem- ble icebergs leaning against each ot- her or the traditional tents of the Sámi people. The interior is ascetic and po- werful, while the east wall is domina- ted by a gigantic glass mosaic by ar- tist Victor Sparre, dating back to 1972, that depicts the return of Christ in ri- ch, warm colours that provide the on- ly contrast to the cold, stark exteri- or. The cathedral’s internal acoustics are impeccable, ensuring its midnight concerts are an experience that sur- passes the religious and extends in- to the transcendental. The city’s main artery and a museum that houses the truth The city’s real soul pulses on the pedestrian street of Storgata, whi- ch preserves the largest concen- tration of historic wooden houses north of Trondheim. As you stroll this street, taking in the yellow and red façades that surround it, it’s ea- sy to imagine how Tromsø looked more than a century ago. It is also right there, in a most elegant neocla- ssical commercial villa dating back to 1838, that you will find Perspe- ctive Museum. Far from containing dry historical collections, this muse- um functions as the city’s intellectu- al epicentre. Its exhibitions of top documentary photography questi- on contemporary life in the Arctic, cultural diversity and human nature. This building was once the home of Norwegian writer Cora Sandel, who- se real name was Sarah Fabricius. Her novels masterfully capture the sense of anxiety and claustropho-

bia, but also the indescribable be- auty of growing up in the far north at the turn of the century. Moving pictures The building that has perhaps sha- ped the city’s modern identity the most is Verdensteatret - the oldest operational cinema in Northern Eu- rope, which opened as far back as 1916. Entering its auditorium is like

stepping into a time capsule. The in- terior is enriched by the frescoes of local artist Sverre Mack, depicting themes from Norwegian fairytales, and has been preserved with incredi- ble care. This isn’t a place where you will watch Hollywood blockbusters today, because Verdensteatret is an art-house cinema, café and the ma- in independent meeting place of the city’s intellectual and artistic elite.

Culture of sweat and icy seas In order to truly understand the north, you must feel it on the skin. And the- re’s no better way to do that than by visiting the Pust (Norwegian for “bre- ath”) sauna. Located directly in the city’s main harbour, with views of the Arctic Cathedral across the water, this floa- ting innovation of architecture has be- come an iconic site. Visually reminis- cent of traditional wooden fish drying huts, with a raw wood façade, inside it Tromse nudi savršen spoj netaknute arktičke prirode i urbanog skandinavskog šarma Tromsø offers the perfect blend of unspoilt Arctic nature and urban Scandinavian charm

offers the ultimate Scandinavian spa experience. The ritual is clear: swea- ting in silence at 85 degrees, watching ships in the indigo night through hu- ge glass panels, then going on deck and jumping straight into the dark, icy fjord which has a water temperature that rarely exceeds four degrees Cel- sius in November. That shock to the body, followed by a rush of adrenaline and endorphins, captures the essence of the arctic way of life by providing a raw renewal of both body and mind. Experience the roof of the world and the most northerly botanical garden Tromsø demands to be observed from above, and the Fjellheisen Cable Car provides that very experience. The gon- dola ride lasts only four minutes, but carries you to the cliff of Storsteinen Mountain, at a height of 421 metres. The view from the top is outstanding – encompassing the island of Trom- søya in the shape of a perfect almond, trapped in the dark net of the sea and protected by the distant ramparts of the snowy peaks of Kvaløya. Back on the ground, located on the edge of the University campus, is the Arctic-Alpi- ne Botanical Garden, the world’s nort-

While December marks the period of mass tourism and deep snow in the area, November in Tromsø is a mon- th dedicated to local culture and de- fiance of the impending darkness. In the middle of the month, the city hosts the powerful Ordkaloten International Literature Festival. Unlike commercial literary events of this kind, this festival brings together Nordic literature’s most important names in libraries and galle- ries, with a special focus on indigeno- us authors and literature that addres- ses the relationship between man and extreme nature. The days of this festi- val see local coffee shops packed with writers, students and citizens engaged in passionate debate. November is al- so the time when Storgata provides the stage for the modest but deeply emo- tional event represented by the lighting ceremony for the city’s festive streetli- ghts. There’s no Hollywood hype here; citizens gather in thick coats, holding glasses of hot glogg (Scandinavian mu- lled wine containing almonds and ra- isins), while local choirs sing traditio- nal songs. This is a collective, warm embrace of the community that marks the start of the long winter cycle.

Dance with giants: whale-watching season Leaving the confines of Tromsø me - ans entering the bright stage of one of the world’s most grandiose natural phenomena. Just a twenty-minute dri- ve across the bridge leads to Kvaløya (Whale Island), representing an area of harsh beauty. And November is a time of real drama unfolding under the surface of the sea. It is then that huge shoals of herring begin their mi- gration to arctic fjords in search of shelter, followed by the ocean’s big- gest predators: orcas and humpback whales. Eco tours on small, noisele- ss hybrid boats depart from Tromsø and take you straight to the heart of this mass hunt. It is an unforgetta- ble experience to watch orcas use sophisticated herring-surrounding te- chniques or to see a forty-ton hum- pback whale emerge from the dark water with the deafening sound of venting from its back. It is at that moment, confronted by the absolu- te wild force of nature, that you rea- lise how small we humans are. If you find the ocean intimidating, the land offers an equally powerful return to nature. Riding a sleigh pu- lled by Alaskan huskies isn’t just a tourist attraction – it’s a historical mode of survival and transportati- on in the frozen north. In kennels lo- cated around the city, such as the famous Tromsø Wilderness Centre, you will be greeted by hundreds of dogs. Their barking echoes through the valley, but the moment the com- mand is given and the sleigh starts its journey, there is an absolute, al- most religious silence. The only au- dible sounds are the crunch of snow On the trail of huskies through the arctic night

Tromse važi za jednu od najboljih svetskih destinacija za posmatranje Aurore borealis Tromsø is considered one of the world’s best destinations for experiencing the Aurora Borealis

under the runners and the synchroni- sed breathing of the dogs. On a No- vember night, lit only by headlamps and moonlight, this journey throu- gh frozen valleys becomes a deeply intimate connection between man, animal and wilderness. Caribbean illusion at the edge of the world Finally, any tour of Tromsø must conclude with a drive to the open ocean and the fishing village of Som - marøy (Summer Island). Connected by bridges that straddle the shallow, turquoise archipelago, this place tru- ly lives up to its name in the summer

and is reminiscent of the Caribbean, thanks to its coral and white sand be- aches. Locals are known for aban- doning their clocks in the summer as an act of cancelling time, becau- se it is then that the sun never sets. However, visiting in November brin- gs a completely different kind of ma- gic. The turquoise water blends with the heavy grey sky, while the white sand is covered with hoarfrost. Wi- th the sharp wind blowing in from the Atlantic, Sommarøy becomes a dramatic, melancholy and indescri- bably beautiful place that serves to remind you that you are at the very edge of the habitable world.

T he Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, in cooperation with Skop- je’s National Gallery of the Republic of North Macedonia, is presenting a solo exhibition by Žarko Bašeski, a Macedoni- an sculptor and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje The exhibition, enti- tled Žarko Bašeski: Corporeality, is open to the public on MoCAB’s ground floor and presents a selection of sculptures charac- terised by hyper-realistic processing, var- ious dimensions and a distinctly consid- ered relationship towards the human body and experience. Bašeski views the human body as a place where the biological, psy- chological, social and intimate intertwine, while sculpture often extends its meaning to the space it occupies. Bašeski explores the boundary between physical presence and internal states, raising questions of emo- tion, vulnerability, identity and psycholog- ical tension. “Corporeality is the moment when I place the human body in a slightly broader function, in psychology, not only physical form, and I got into it so deeply that now I can't get out,” says the artist.

SPORT / SPORTS Liga nacija: Srbija–Nemačka Nations League: Serbia vs. Germany

F udbalska reprezentacija Srbije 13. novembra dočekuje selekciju Nemačke na stadionu „Rajko Mitić“ u Beogra- du, u okviru pretposlednjeg, 5. kola grupne faze UEFA Lige nacija.

S erbia’s national football team welcomes Germany to Bel- grade’s Rajko Mitić Stadium on 13 th November, as part of the 5 th and penultimate round of the group stage of the UEFA Nations League. This match represents a make-or-break chance for our national team in the A division. The stakes are clear: if we lose to Germany, we risk relegation to a lower level of the competition (League B) in the next cycle. On the other hand, any positive result leaves the door open for survival among the elite, depending on the results of the last round-robin match, which will see Serbia visit Greece on 16 th November. Germany arrives with its strongest squad, so Serbia is awaited by an ex- tremely demanding 90 minutes tactically against an opponent that mercilessly punishes every midfield mistake.

A ndre Riju, slavni holandski vio- linista i dirigent, ponovo stiže u Beograd! KONCERT / CONCERT Andre Riju i Johan Štraus orkestar André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra

F amous Dutch violinist and conduc- tor André Rieu is returning to Bel- grade! This modern “King of the Waltz” will perform at the Belgrade Are- na on 19 th November, together with his famous Johann Strauss Orchestra. He is already well-known to local audiences from his previous sold-out performances, which is why he is always eagerly awaited in the

Serbian capital. His shows have long since outgrown the strict confines of classical music - Rieu is a master of bringing a se- rious sound to the masses, with impecca- ble production, lavish costumes and sub- tle humour. His repertoire traditionally includes the greatest classical hits, oper- ettas, famous film music and indispensa- ble Viennese waltzes.

Kroz brutalne borbe i manipulacije Kapito- la, fanovi će konačno videti kako je mladi, talentovani Hejmič slomljen i pretvoren u ciničnog alkoholičara i mentora kojeg smo upoznali u originalnoj trilogiji. T he second half of November brings one of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters to cinemas – in the form of the new Hunger Games prequel. The plot unfolds 24 years before the first movie and its story of Katniss Everdeen. The focus is on the infa- mous 50 th Hunger Games, when the only competitor to survive the harsh arena was Haymitch Abernathy. Based on Susan Collins’ new novel, this film brings a darker psychological insight into the world of Pa- nem. Through brutal battles and manipulation of the Capitol, fans will finally see how the young, talented Haymitch is broken and transformed into the cynical alcoholic and mentor we met in the original trilogy.
