Zašto baš Filadelfija? WHY PHILADELPHIA SPECIFICALLY?
Why is the film set in Philadelphia, and not New York or Chicago? Stallone needed a city that exuded a working-class spirit, history, and a raw, un- polished aesthetic. Philadelphia, as the birthplace of the American na- tion and a former industrial powerhouse, proved perfect for the portrayal of a hero who’s tough and forgotten, but who refuses to quit. The cen- tral focal point of the entire film is the city’s monumental Museum of Art. Located on the rise of Fairmount hill, this museum is one of the largest of its kind in America, housing priceless works by Duchamp, Cézanne and Van Gogh. However, for millions of tourists, the real attraction is the stair- case at its entrance: exactly 72 stone steps leading to the main plateau. The history of this facility was forever changed by the scene in which Rocky, after several failed attempts, finally runs to the top of the stairs, raises his fists skywards and takes in the panorama of the city to the beats of Gon- na Fly Now. The steps are today officially called “The Rocky Steps” in pop culture. At the very bottom of the staircase, to the right side, is the famous bronze statue of Rocky Balboa. Exceeding a height of three metres, this sculpture was originally created for the purpose of filming Rocky III, after which Stallone donated it to the City of Philadelphia. Despite the muse- um’s more conservative circles protesting for decades, claiming that it was a movie prop and not “real art”, the pressure from the public and fans was so great that the statue was permanently installed. It is today the third most popular tourist attraction in Philadelphia, visited by thousands of peo- ple who wait in line every day to have their photo taken with raised fists. In saying that this statue is the city’s third most visited attraction, it is worth noting that the two sites that are even more popular among tourists and history buffs are genuine monuments of American independence that are significant to Philadelphia, so don’t miss them while you’re in the city. One is Independence Hall, the building where the American Declaration of In- dependence was adopted and the U.S. Constitution was subsequently signed in 1776. This edifice represents the historic heart of America and is under UNESCO protection. The other attraction, located nearby, is the Liberty Bell, a famous cracked bronze bell that represents a historical sym- bol of the abolition of slavery and the struggle for emancipation. It is visit- ed each year by millions of tourists. The bronze statue of Rocky Balboa is right behind these two American “national shrines”, in terms of the num- ber of people queuing to take photos.
