November words and lights over Storgata

Culture of sweat and icy seas In order to truly understand the north, you must feel it on the skin. And the- re’s no better way to do that than by visiting the Pust (Norwegian for “bre- ath”) sauna. Located directly in the city’s main harbour, with views of the Arctic Cathedral across the water, this floa- ting innovation of architecture has be- come an iconic site. Visually reminis- cent of traditional wooden fish drying huts, with a raw wood façade, inside it Tromse nudi savršen spoj netaknute arktičke prirode i urbanog skandinavskog šarma Tromsø offers the perfect blend of unspoilt Arctic nature and urban Scandinavian charm

offers the ultimate Scandinavian spa experience. The ritual is clear: swea- ting in silence at 85 degrees, watching ships in the indigo night through hu- ge glass panels, then going on deck and jumping straight into the dark, icy fjord which has a water temperature that rarely exceeds four degrees Cel- sius in November. That shock to the body, followed by a rush of adrenaline and endorphins, captures the essence of the arctic way of life by providing a raw renewal of both body and mind. Experience the roof of the world and the most northerly botanical garden Tromsø demands to be observed from above, and the Fjellheisen Cable Car provides that very experience. The gon- dola ride lasts only four minutes, but carries you to the cliff of Storsteinen Mountain, at a height of 421 metres. The view from the top is outstanding – encompassing the island of Trom- søya in the shape of a perfect almond, trapped in the dark net of the sea and protected by the distant ramparts of the snowy peaks of Kvaløya. Back on the ground, located on the edge of the University campus, is the Arctic-Alpi- ne Botanical Garden, the world’s nort-

While December marks the period of mass tourism and deep snow in the area, November in Tromsø is a mon- th dedicated to local culture and de- fiance of the impending darkness. In the middle of the month, the city hosts the powerful Ordkaloten International Literature Festival. Unlike commercial literary events of this kind, this festival brings together Nordic literature’s most important names in libraries and galle- ries, with a special focus on indigeno- us authors and literature that addres- ses the relationship between man and extreme nature. The days of this festi- val see local coffee shops packed with writers, students and citizens engaged in passionate debate. November is al- so the time when Storgata provides the stage for the modest but deeply emo- tional event represented by the lighting ceremony for the city’s festive streetli- ghts. There’s no Hollywood hype here; citizens gather in thick coats, holding glasses of hot glogg (Scandinavian mu- lled wine containing almonds and ra- isins), while local choirs sing traditio- nal songs. This is a collective, warm embrace of the community that marks the start of the long winter cycle.
