But what if we told you that you could (and should) treat red as a neutral col- our, able to be combined with practically everything? Forget about the usual black or white! Red is the new universal factor in every wardrobe. Let us explain. Judg- ing by the season’s catwalks, red is a bold shade that can be styled in a surprisingly versatile way. As a “base neutral” colour, it doesn’t have to be limited to the role of a contrasting accessory. In the latest collections of brands Zankov and Lii – two of the most interesting young names on the contemporary fashion scene – a bright red shirt is worn over long-sleeved tops in light blue or butter yellow, creat- ing a colour-blocking effect. Brands Ce- line and Christopher John Rogers com- bined a red top with trousers in earthy brown tones, creating a calmer and more grounded look. You can thus treat red as the simplest style trick for refreshing your wardrobe. Not only is it extremely easy to combine (able to be paired with anything that takes your fancy), it’s also a sure way to add a dose of character to any outfit – because red is a colour that always attracts atten- tion. Why else do you think this trend has been chosen by catwalk stars and celebri- ties? Attracting attention is simply their favourite part of the game.

Over the history of pop culture, cos- tume designers, stylists and celebrities themselves have used red to create an ef- fect that turns heads. Red dresses have done just that over the years, but also much more. In the film Pretty Woman, the char- acter of Vivian, portrayed by Julia Rob- erts, shines in a dress created by costume designer Marilyn Vance (who was actual- ly initially instructed to make it in black). At the beginning of Baz Luhrmann’s mu- sical Moulin Rouge, Satine (Nicole Kid- man) wears an irresistible red dress (which won an Oscar for costume designers Cath- erine Martin and Angus Strathie)... Tru- ly spectacular. A hint of red is exactly what neutral,

understated palettes are seeking this sea- son. That’s because fashion is ultimately at its best when it flirts with a dose of “dan- ger” – and nothing says you’re a part of that game like a red detail threaded through a bag strap, a belt, tights, or even Rouge Louboutin crimson peeking out from un- der baggy charcoal-grey trousers. This fiery hue definitely isn’t for those wanting to blend into the crowd. Red is most often used as an accent colour, rep- resenting a way to inject some energy and character into an otherwise neutral com- bination. Stars of the street style scene, like Hailey Bieber, have complemented the classic jeans and T-shirt look with the ad- dition of seductive red pumps.
