RUSSELL TRACK TEAMS READY TO GO

With the other three, he is not certain right now which type of track event may prove a potential OFSA entry point for Russell High School. “Usually our strength lies in the hurdles,” he said. “But right now we have some poten- tial success in the steeplechase.” Over at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School, Nikki Giesbrecht, co-coach for the Ravens track and field team, confirmed they have a baker’s dozen athletes ready for EOSSAA, with the 13 competitors spreading their skills across 18 individual events, along with the 4x400 senior boys relay. “We’re all over the place,” Giesbrecht said, adding there are entries in the running events and in some of the field events like shot put and discus.

Both high schools in the Village of Russell are ready to go for gold at the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association Track and Field Championships in Kingston this week. Coach Gord Zubyk at Russell High School has high hopes that someone from among the four athletes who qualified for EOSSAA will still be in the running for a chance at the provincials later in the season. “I think three have a really strong chance of moving on to OFSA,” Zubyk said during a May 19 interview, following the recent Pres- cott-Russell Track and Field Championships in Ottawa at the Terry Fox Field. Zubyk said one of the four performed well enough at the PR regionals to qualify for EOSSAA, and will benefit from the chance at competing in Kingston against the top high
