Small but strong team for EOSSAA track Russell Township has a 10-person team of athletes from both its English high schools representing the municipality at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associa- tion’s (EOSSAA) track and field championships in Kingston. In the girls division, Russell High School’s EOSSAA entries include: Jodi Mac- Dougall, junior girls 200-metre and long jump; Vanessa MacDonald, junior girls 1500-metre, long jump, and javelin; Ariane Peladeau, senior girls high jump and long jump; Ashley MacDo- nald, senior girls shot put and javelin. In the boys division, both Russell High School and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School have EOSSAA entries. Representing RHS will be Daniel Wiltshire, midget boys 1500-metre; Justin Lavio- lette, midget shot put and javelin; Matthew Kreft, junior 200-metre; Matthew Manion, senior boys 110-metre hurdles, high jump, and long jump. Representing STA will be Peter McCannell in midget boys shot put and Nicholas Goodwin in senior 100-metre and javelin. A fundraising event for the first respond- ers of the Fort McMurray wildfires, aptly named “Fort Mac we got your back” will be held at the Russell arena on Saturday, June 4. The event is organized by Russell area residents Connie Johnston, Marie-Claire

Drinks and food will be available and a Russell band called The Front End will be providing the entertainment for the evening. Local firefighters will also be putting on a show. Although the details of this have not yet been confirmed, there are talks about a lip-sync battle. The organizers ask that residents and businesses that are willing to help contribute various items to the auction such as crafts, baked goods, gift certificates and whatever else comes to mind. One of the more coveted auction items will be Russell Township’s ownMayor, Pierre Leroux, who has offered himself up for two and a half hours. Whoever wins will be able to choose what the mayor will be doing, such as cleaning your pool or mowing the grass, but also what he will be wearing during that time. P eople will also have the chance to sign, for a price, amunicipal flag that will be sent to Fort McMurray in order to show support. All proceeds from the event will be go- ing to the first responder’s associations in Northern Alberta. It was deemed a better option to send the profits straight to the first responders. Tickets are now available in Embrun at Pierre et Fils and Euphoria, as well as in Russell at Urban Country , Pronto and The Russell Restaurant.
