I’ve never taken anybody on short term, it’s always been with a focus on the long term. I want them to gain experience, to grow. I want them to prosper and be an asset. The properly trained Pirtek MSST can provide the superior service that Pirtek is rightly known for. The opportunities are there for them but they have to want it. Lonely times Running a small business can feel very lonely at times – I’ve sat here at the end of the day pondering, how do I drive this business forward.

It’s in those darkest moments that the phone rings and it’s another licensee. You’re sitting there and it dawns on you, just ask somebody – whether it’s Colin at Basildon who’s been in the game for a number of years or Dan at Ashford.

Laura Wilson in Pirtek UK accounts and Jamie Spears, who has now moved to Ashford, are two who gave us a lot of help. They’re just a piece of the larger support network and without that support it would have been more of a struggle. Coming of age If you take on a going concern with an established customer base and if you don’t have the staff, there is a big impact on the business. The point when I would say I was able to step back was after the guys I’ve got now started. They didn’t walk in the door fully formed, so it was probably a good six to eight months after that.

There are a lot of good people in the network. All of them are willing to help another franchisee. My brother was my biggest pillar of support because he had done the job for 20 years, but also because he was my brother.
