Job Description

Hospitality and Accommodation Services (HAS) employs over 1200 staff and has a turnover exceeding £55m in the last financial year. HAS plays a unique and significant role in the quality of the student, staff and visitor experience at the University of Birmingham. As one of the largest hospitality organisations in the West Midlands, HAS provides round the clock services across diverse areas such as the University’s sporting facilities, catering, cleaning, conferencing, hotel operations, day nurseries, portering, post, branded and own-brand retail outlets, visitor services and attractions (e.g. Winterbourne House & Gardens), student housing, transport, waste disposal and recycling. HAS is a highly commercial organisation operating within the University context. The Deputy Director & Head of Business Services (HAS) is responsible for directing and developing the Business/Professional Services’ operations and administration within and for HAS in order to support delivery of the Department’s and University objectives. This involves the strategic and pro-active management of people, resources and infrastructure and the development of administrative and business functions. Reporting to the Director of HAS and being a member of their Senior Management Team, the Deputy Director & Head of Business Services (HAS) will pro-actively work in partnership with Professional Services departments across the University, in particular Human Resources, IT, Estates, External Relations and Finance, playing a key role in ensuring effective partnership working between Professional Services staff in the University and within HAS. The post-holder will also head up two of Hospitality and Accommodation Services’ own business areas – our on-site childcare day nurseries provision (currently providing a service to c.240 children) and our student employment agency, Worklink. Worklink provide casual employment opportunities to our students in a wide variety of roles across the entire University and place approximately 5,000 students into 24,000 casual roles/placements each academic year.

Main Duties

1. Administration Strategic and operational management of administration within HAS, working in partnership with Professional Services and business partners to ensure a joined up, effective and efficient administration.

Developing and delivering systems/ structures to enable effective day-to-day management and administration within HAS.

Ensure that all Business/Professional Services and administrative staff within or aligned to HAS are working collectively in delivering efficient, effective and cohesive support to HAS.
