Al Jazeera: A Window of Light and Truth

I was not even seven when my father came home carrying the box the whole family had been dreaming of: a television set. It was a hot summer’s day in 1997. Once all of the technical tasks were completed, we switched it on. As a child, watching cartoons was my ultimate joy. But, as the days passed, I found myself attracted to a news channel my father used to speak enthusiastically about to every guest who stepped into our house. “It has not only broken all the barriers, but it also defies the news stereotypes,” he used to say. From then on, I dreamed of becoming a journalist, and not just any journalist – an Al Jazeera journalist. To an Amazigh child living in an oasis in the remote end of Morocco’s southeast, Al Jazeera was and still is the true window to the world. Because of it, at that young age, I was able to understand complicated political issues – at a time when the internet was not widely available to the public, at least in our area. Days, months and years flew by, and I graduated from high school. I was then accepted into the Higher Institute of Information and Communication in Rabat. ‘It could be a divine sign that my dream will come true,’ I told myself.
