UNDERSTANDING the BUSINESS of HEALTHCARE
The U.S. healthcare system is complex with multiple players, unprecedented scientific innovation, continued growth, and dynamic change. Understanding the Business of Healthcare brings leaders together from across the industry to break down barriers and communicate the challenges that different parties face, so that leaders can identify new ways forward. Faculty from the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and the UNC Health Sciences Schools will guide participants through a journey of the healthcare value chain including patients, providers, payers, manufacturers, and policy makers. You will leave with a deeper understanding of all components of the healthcare ecosystem and be better equipped to innovate across the industry.

THE FACILITY Understanding the Business of Healthcare will take place at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Our premier meeting and conference facilities are designed to provide an ideal environment for learning without distractions. They are fully equipped with the latest presentation and instructional technologies. Our 183 on-site guest rooms and suites are elegant and accommodating. Select suites are open to guests in the historic DuBose House across the courtyard, which wraps modern amenities in a stately, historic ambiance. The Rizzo Center features an outdoor infinity lap pool and a 2,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center.

In response, UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School has established the Center for the Business of Health, bringing together experts from schools across UNC. The new program ‘Understanding the Business of Healthcare’ has been developed to help prepare business leaders for the future challenges in healthcare.

PURPOSE 1. Enhance existing healthcare leaders’ understanding of the dynamics and business issues at play in the U.S. healthcare system across the value chain 2. Provide knowledge and skills that will accelerate the development of healthcare leaders as they aspire to positions that can truly transform healthcare in the U.S. 3. Facilitate the onboarding of leaders who are new to the U.S. healthcare industry OUTCOMES • Healthcare leaders will be able to work more effectively with other participants in the value chain • Healthcare leaders who aspire to lead at the next level will accelerate their readiness for promotion • Healthcare leaders in corporate functions such as finance, human resources, legal, and corporate strategy will work more effectively across functions, demonstrate greater business acumen, and accelerate their readiness to switch to a business role • Innovators will be able to search for and synthesize ideas from across their enterprise to develop new processes, products, and business models • New entrants to the healthcare industry will accelerate their performance in the new industry in which they are operating
As the complexity, cost, and rate of change of healthcare continues to increase, the need to prepare our leaders to face these challenges has never been greater. ‘Understanding the Business of Healthcare’ is designed with this purpose in mind. What makes this program so valuable is that it incorporates multiple sectors of the industry and creates an atmosphere in which executives learn from each other in a structured format.
