MARCH/APRIL 2019

SPRING ON MY MIND Getting Outside to Bike, Run, and Swim

Are you as eager for spring as I am? I’m looking forward to warmer weather and getting outside. For me, spring means bike rides, runs, and enjoying our yard (both working and relaxing in it). I sometimes take longer road bike rides up to Emmett and into Horseshoe Bend, and I also enjoy mountain bike rides when I can. It’s a joy living in a city with so many fun outdoor activities so close by. Once in a while, it’s fun to get out of the city and visit another part of this beautiful state. Every summer since 2007, I’ve participated in the Spudman Triathlon in Burley, Idaho. With a 1.5k swim, a 40k bike ride, and a 10k run, I do a lot of training every spring. It definitely takes time to get comfortable in the water. I train at a local pool leading up to the race, but the triathlon is in the open water of the Snake River. It’s usually not too cold, and there are people who swim it without wetsuits, though you probably won’t catch me without one. Most people opt for that extra warmth. This will be my 13th year of competing in the Spudman, and I plan to keep going strong. I have all my race bibs stored at home; maybe one day I’ll do something with them to honor the role the triathlon has played in my life. Speaking of home, my family is doing great. My two daughters are both married now and are enjoying life and staying busy. My eldest has a new baby who’s nearing her first birthday. It’s hard to believe time has moved that quickly! We are all smitten with this little one. We enjoy her so much — she’s just so fun to be around. Since she lives in Utah with my daughter and son-in-law, we take every chance we can to visit them. In addition to visiting Utah, I’m also heading to Guatemala this spring for our second service trip. Our marketing coordinator, Jessica, and I went for the first time last year and had a rewarding, humbling trip. This year, I’m bringing my family along — my wife, Jen, and my two youngest, my boys. They’re very excited to experience this place I’ve talked so much about. I’m looking

forward to returning to Guatemala to share my skills and learn from the wonderful people there.

At the office, we have you in mind. We’re adding a few upgrades to bring our services up-to-date in 2019. Every year, technology offers new and exciting innovations. We can’t wait to incorporate them into our practice and improve the quality of care we deliver you.

I look forward to seeing you soon, and until then, have a wonderful start to your spring.

-Dr. Rigby

P.S. Our Patient Appreciation Party is coming up on Aug. 2! We’re going big this year with a night at the Boise Zoo, reserved exclusively for our Ustick patients and their families! Space is limited, so let us know you’re coming. I’m excited to see you there.

The Truth About the First Meal of the Day IS IT OKAY TO SKIP BREAKFAST?

We can, however, bust the notion that breakfast is the “most important meal of the day.” This phrase was used to market breakfast cereal in the last century. In reality, it doesn’t mean anything. The most important meal of the day is whichever meal you get the most out of, whether it’s nutritional value, enjoyment, or both. Having a healthy, protein-rich breakfast does come with benefits, though. It gives you energy for the day and helps you avoid scrambling to find something to eat a couple hours later when hunger sets in. All too often, skipping breakfast (or having a carb- heavy breakfast) leads people to raid the vending machine or make unhealthy food choices they wouldn’t ordinarily make. Along these same lines, skipping breakfast may encourage you to eat more later in the day at lunch or dinner. You may think you’re saving calories, but over the course of a day, you can end up consuming more calories than if you had simply eaten breakfast. With so much research on the subject of breakfast, one thing is clear: You should eat when you feel hungry. You don’t have to live by the conventional wisdom of “three squares a day.” When you listen to your body, you’ll feel better for it!

Sometimes you skip breakfast simply because you don’t have time to eat. Other times, you skip breakfast because nothing really appeals to you. This is a common occurrence for many people across the country. But when you skip breakfast, you may find that you feel just fine. It begs the question: Is breakfast really that important? Do you need to eat breakfast? It depends. Most people can skip breakfast and be totally fine. They’ll make it to lunch without skipping a beat. It all comes down to how you feel . Some people need breakfast or they’ll have to deal with mood swings — often referred to as being “hangry” — caused by low blood sugar. A healthy breakfast can stabilize your mood, helping you feel more positive, energized, and focused throughout the morning.

WHICH FLOSSING METHOD SHOULD YOU USE? Water Flossers vs. Dental Floss

DENTAL FLOSS Floss has been around for about 200 years, but it didn’t become popular until after WWII. Dental floss functions similarly to a water flosser, except that instead of using a stream of water, you manually floss between your teeth and along your gums to remove debris, bacteria, and tartar. Many

If you’ve ever visited the dentist, it’s more than likely you’ve been asked how frequently you floss. Truthfully, many people choose not to floss — in fact, only about 4 in 10 Americans do. The act of flossing can be difficult for some people, but it’s one of the most important daily habits you can develop to sustain overall health. THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOSSING Flossing is a vital part of maintaining oral health because it removes food, bacteria, and plaque that toothbrushes can’t reach. A person who brushes their teeth but doesn’t floss is more likely to suffer from poor oral health than someone who flosses once a day. And in the dental world, there are two popular methods of flossing: water flossers and dental floss. WATER FLOSSERS Water flossers shoo 1 t out a jet of water that flows between the teeth as its nozzle moves along the gum line. The pressurized water blasts your gums and the hard-to-reach places, removing food, debris, plaque, and bacteria in pulsating bursts. Although these devices can be expensive, many people prefer the water flosser since it’s easier to use, especially if you have braces, dental implants, or nonremovable bridgework.

individuals prefer to use dental floss because it allows you to have more control when you floss. However, it can sometimes cause the gums to bleed, which is why many prefer water flossers.

Dentists recommend that, whichever method you choose, you should floss at least once a day for optimal teeth and gum health. To get into the habit of flossing more regularly, try to floss before you brush your teeth. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, that’s the “ideal sequence for the most thorough removal of dental plaque.”

TAKE A BREAK

Hamburgers OPENING DAY

Ingredients • 1 pound ground chuck, 80 percent lean • 4 soft, white hamburger buns, split • 4 1/4-inch thick tomato slices • 12–16 pickle rounds • 4 small leaves iceberg lettuce

Inspired by Saveur Magazine

• 4 1/4-inch thick yellow onion slices • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil • Salt and pepper, to taste • Condiments of your choice

Directions 1. Lightly grease a small nonstick skillet with oil. Heat over medium-high. 2. While heating, gently shape meat into four patties 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Be careful to handle the meat as little as possible to prevent tough burgers. Season liberally with salt and pepper. 3. Sear patties on each side, about 1 minute per side. Reduce heat to medium-low and continue cooking until desired doneness, about 1 more minute per side for medium-rare, 2 more per side for medium-well. 4. Let meat rest for a minimum of 3 minutes. 5. To assemble, place patty on bottom bun and top with tomato, pickles, lettuce, and onion (in that order). Spread condiments on top half of bun and place on top of onion. Serve.
