HISTORY Bethel Colony of Mercy was founded in 1948 by Mr. and Mrs. James N. Claffee as a non-profit, non- denominational, Christian ministry to men in bondage to alcohaol and/or drug addiction. Bethel Colony has offered help to thousands of men from all walks of life. Having received new life in Christ, scores have experienced restored health, renewed minds, redeemed reputations and reunited families.
PURPOSE The purpose of Bethel Colony is best summarized in our slogan, “Victory Through Christ.” God has provided the cross of Jesus Christ as the only true escape from bondage. At Bethel Colony we seek to point men to the reality of the indwelling Christ as the present Savior from sin and His provision of the Holy Spirit who transforms men in every area of life.
LOCATION Bethel Colony of Mercy is located on State Route 18 North in Lenoir, North Carolina. It consists of a complex of modest, attractive buildings overlooking the peaceful Blue Ridge Mountains. The facility includes a chapel, administrative offices, gym, weight room, recreation areas and student dorms.

“All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23) which condemns us to death “to be cast in the lake of fire forever” ( Rom. 6:23) “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (John 3:16 – 18 ). “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” Salvation is a gift – it cannot be earned or bought – but is given by the grace of God. “For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Eph 2:8-9) Salvation is the result of a new or 2nd birth. “Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again.” (John 3:7) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (John 3:6) Your first birth is of the flesh – from your mother’s womb. Your second birth is of the spirit – when the Spirit of Jesus Christ comes into you and produces a new birth. “If you have not the Spirit of Christ you are not of His.” (Rom 8:9) If you are convinced that you are a sinner condemned to an eternal Hell and that Jesus Christ died for your sins as a gift to you and you are ready to receive that gift by asking Him to come live in you as your Lord and become your savior then Rom. 10:8-13 tells us how this comes about. But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” If you are now ready to receive Jesus Christ into your heart – I want to pray for you – and then you pray to receive this new birth. We will lead you in this simple prayer to receive this new birth and also ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit. “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit. (Eph 5:18)
(Our prayer for you) Dear heavenly Father, we pray for this one to receive Jesus Christ into his/her life by faith. You said in Your Word that if we ask You to come into our heart You would do so and make us born again. We ask You to do this for this dear soul who is honestly and earnestly seeking You. We also ask You to fill this precious person with Your Spirit giving them a hunger for Your Word and a good understanding of it, and to lead them to a good Bible believing church where they can grow in their new life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen. You too can be saved, “for God desires that all men be saved.” – 1 Timothy 2:4

Substance A Christian answer to alcohol, drug, and substance abuse for the addicted seeking freedom. We are a Bible teaching ministry for those who are interested in a Christian approach to treating substance abuse and alcoholism. We teach the addicted that there is victory through Jesus Christ and the truths of the Bible. Our addiction treatment center offers classroom teaching, workbooks, audio tapes, personal counseling, and worship services. Bethel’s treatment center is primarily designed to produce in each man a more effective lifestyle in which he allows Jesus Christ to take control of his life to achieve victory over addictions. After completing and submitting your application either by phone, online, or fax:We will need the results of two blood tests (HIV and TB) and the $250.00 Entry Fee before you will be called to come to Bethel. Once entered into the program this Entry Fee is non- refundable.From time to time there is money given specifically to be put in a scholarship fund for those who have no way to pay the full Entry Fee. However, if money is available and you qualify to receive help you will be requested to make a partial payment. OVERVIEW OF THE BASIC 65-DAY PROGRAM
1. Morning classroom Bible Teaching.
2. Cassette tape teaching 3 afternoons a week (Charles Stanley and others). 3. A six book Bible study series from the Navigators Studies in Christian Living. 4. Individual Christian counseling by a trained staff counselor. Homework is then assigned on an individual basis according to a person’s individual needs. 5. A 59 page 3-ring notebook is given to each man consisting of three parts. (A) guidelines, visitation rules, daily schedule (B) prayers: model spiritual warfare prayers are included and each man is required to read them each at least once a day and encouraged to incorporate them in his private praying. (C) helps: Scriptures for sin problems including such articles as “Knowing God’s Will”, “Confession”, “Total Commitment to Jesus Christ”, “Are You Taking Possession of What God Has Given You?”, and “Should a Christian Drink?”. 6. Section C of the notebook also contains a sheet on moral inventory in which each man is asked to evaluate himself weekly, to help him see how he is progressing. Pages are included which define the terms more clearly for him. 7. Daily Work Projects: Each man must consent to working before coming. Work projects are assigned after morning class and continue until lunch, and from lunch until 4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. 9. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings, one of the following is held: (A) Classroom Teaching (B) Evening Worship Service (C) Video Teaching Tape (Includes written tape response) 10. Recreation includes basketball, volleyball, softball, horseshoes, occasional hike, T.V. (with viewing limited to sports, news, nature and religion.) 8. Sunday Morning Worship Service: 11:00 a.m.
11.Volunteer Prayer Groups are encouraged on evenings when other activities are not scheduled and as students desire.

WHAT KIND OF PLACE IS BETHEL COLONY? Bethel Colony is a Christian renewal center designed to help those who really want to change their lives. Victory in Jesus and the truths of the Bible are taught here. WHAT MUST I DO TO ENROLL? You may fill out an application online or call 828-754-3781 to complete an application over the phone. You will need to have a TB test and an HIV test. Results of one or the other are required before you can be placed on the active waiting list. Both test results are required before you will be called to come to Bethel Colony of Mercy. HOW LONG IS THE WAITING LIST? The office manager will call you when a bed is available. (may be 3-4 weeks) You will be given 48 hours notice to come in. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? There is an entry fee of $250.00 for student applicants. HOW LONG IS THE PROGRAM? 65 days CAN I STAY LONGER THAN 65 DAYS? The initial program is for 65 days. If, at the end of 65 days, it is determined by one of the pastors on staff that you need to stay longer, you may be able to extend for 30 days. HOW MANY MEN DO YOU HAVE AT ONE TIME? Capacity is 82 men. WHAT ARE YOUR VISITATION POLICIES? All visits must be pre-approved by staff. • Sundays from breakfast until 6:00pm (student must attend Sunday morning service. Family is encouraged to attend with student. Counseling is available for couples if requested.) Girlfriends • Girlfriends are not allowed! This is a time the student needs to focus on overcoming his problems and developing a relationship with the Lord. Exception: Girlfriends who have children fathered by the student may bring those children to visit their father. Parents and Wives • Saturdays from 3:00pm until 10:00pm
HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I BRING? All of your basic needs are met while at Bethel Colony of Mercy. There is a canteen on campus where you may purchase soft drinks, candy, popcorn, and other snacks. $20.00 should be sufficient. If you want to bring more than that, there is a safe available, but we do not recommend that you bring large sums of money. WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING? You will need work clothes (clothes, including shoes, that you don’t mind getting dirty) and dress clothes for church services. Suits are not necessary for church, but nice shirts and slacks are recommended. No slogans about beer, bars, drugs, sex, women, tobacco, music or anything that is contrary to a Christian lifestyle will be allowed.. WHAT PERSONAL ITEMS SHOULD/CAN I BRING? You should bring the following items: • A Bible (if you have one) • Towels and washcloths (use a laundry marker to identify them) • Pillow • Personal toiletries such as shaving cream, razor blades, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc. • Clothing with slogans about beer, bars, drugs, sex, women, tobacco, music or anything that is contrary to a Christian lifestyle • Radios, stereos, walkmans or tape decks of any size, beepers, pagers, cell phones or any other electronic device • Magazines, books, audio tapes, video tapes, video games or playing cards • Caffeinated drinks including coffee • Over the counter medications You may not bring the following: • Cologne or mouthwash that contains alcohol • Aerosol sprays
DOES THE PROGRAM REALLY WORK? If you really want to change your life then Bethel Colony of Mercy is the place foryou. It is not the program that works; it is Jesus Christ that works in and through you to change your life for all eternity! You just need to be willing. CAN I SMOKE WHILE AT BETHEL COLONY OF MERCY? Cigarette smoking is strongly discouraged ; however, it is allowed in designated areas and at designated times only. Manufactured Cigarettes only; vapes, e-cigs, roll your own or any other form of tobacco are not allowed. WHAT FORMS OF RECREATION DO YOU HAVE? There is a gymnasium for basketball and a weight room. We have volleyball, shuffle board, and horseshoes. Board games are available in the library. Softball is often played on Sunday afternoons at a nearby field. Selected television viewing is available at designated times.

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:4-7)
Often family members ask what they can do to help their loved one while he is at Bethel learning the truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Here is the testimony of Stacy Pruitt, wife of Paul Pruitt who is the Executive Director at Bethel:
These are the Scriptures I prayed (and still pray) for my husband.
The first thing I did was to pray for him. I started praying some of the prayers that Apostle Paul prayed for the early churches as recorded in Scripture (Ephesians 1:15-23, Philippians 1:3-11, andEphesians 3:14-21) except where he would say “you” or “your” referring to the church, I put in Paul’s (my husband’s) name. The reason I did this is because the Bible says that God’s Word does not come back void. I knew this had to be God’s perfect will for Paul because it was God’s very Word. I knew Paul had the Holy spirit living inside of him so therefore I knew that God could give him revelation in the knowledge of Him, that the eyes of his understanding could be enlightened, that He (God) could show him (my husband) what is the hope of His (God’s) calling, and that God had begun a good work in Paul and would complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. These are just a few things that these prayers ask God for. Next, I did not take it personally against my husband because I recognized it was a spiritual battle. Satan has come to kill, steal and destroy. I knew Paul still had his own responsibility, but Satan will do what it takes to keep him in bondage. The Bible says that we don’t war against flesh and blood but against principalities and darkness, so I feel it’s very important that you come against bondage. God has given us that authority. Lastly, I asked others to pray for him. I didn’t ask just anyone, but the people I knew wouldn’t judge him but would earnestly pray for him with me. In Matthew 18:19-20, Jesus said; “Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” I know that the people that I asked to be praying for Paul were in agreement with me on Paul’s behalf. God has done a great work in Paul’s life and in mine. We’ve been married since December, 1999, and now have three wonderful children. We have gone through Bible college and are now part of the staff at Bethel Colony. I know that we could not and would not be where we’re at today had it not been for God’s grace. Have confidence in God that He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace (we) have been saved) (Ephesians 2:4-5).
My husband Paul, a pastor on staff at Bethel, went through the program at Bethel three times. We met during his extended program the second time he came to Bethel. Therefore, we were dating during the third time he went through Bethel’s program and was married shortly after, so I wanted to share with you some of the things I did and still do for my husband. What is it that you can do to help your husband/son/ father/brother, etc., do to really grasp hold of Jesus and not fall back into this bondage of addiction?
