Marjorie’s Greatest Christmas Present
Another year, I got Marjorie a gift certificate for Red Lobster. Everyone in the family thought this gift was hilarious, because I don’t like Red Lobster and I don’t like eating out. I prefer to be at home eating a healthy, home- cooked meal and enjoying quiet, family conversation. After being at work all day, I need some relaxing time with the family. Plus, we have a no-cellphone policy at dinner,
There’s a reason that people say grandchildren are better than children. It’s because you can sugar them up, wear them out, and, at the end of the day, they go back home to their parents! I’m just kidding — kind of — but every grandparent remembers when their first grandchild was born. Having your own children is a wonderful
experience, but watching your child bring their own baby into the world is something else. This year, Marjorie got the best Christmas gift she could ask for: her very first granddaughter.
so it’s just a more enjoyable place to eat. But I know how much Marjorie likes Red Lobster, so I had to do something special for Christmas. However, none of my gag gifts will ever compare to the gift she got this year from our daughter, Kyndra. In the middle of October, Kyndra gave birth to her first child and named her Konnor. Kyndra went into labor pretty early in the morning, so Marjorie went with her to the hospital. I had to go to the office to take care of a couple things, but I made it to the hospital in time for Konnor to be born. She weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and was 21 inches long. Konnor is such a beautiful baby, and she was pretty easy on Kyndra when she first came home. She sleeps and eats really well, and is overall such a joy to be around. Konnor hates being cold. She loves to be all bundled up, and she loves to snuggle. Marjorie has been over the moon since Konnor was born, and she considers Konnor the best Christmas present she never even asked for. We are excited to have more grandchildren, but Konnor will keep Marjorie enthralled in the meantime. We can’t wait to get to know her.
Every year, I get Marjorie some sort of gag gift for Christmas. They usually have something to do with the things that I do that annoy her, or something so practical that it’s borderline sarcastic. One year, I got Marjorie a spoon holder so that when she cooks, instead of leaving the spoon on the counter to make a mess, she can set it on the holder and keep the counter clean. This usually happens when she makes spaghetti.
Keep in mind, she’s an amazing cook, so I am definitely not complaining about her cooking. But she always leaves a red spot on the counter near the stove while making the sauce. She rolled her eyes when she opened that gift, because she knows how much of a neat freak I am. But she still uses it

Defining an Act of God
DEFINING AN ACT OF GOD There have been many court cases over the years that define accidents (usually auto accidents) as “acts of God.” But what does this term really mean? What is an act of God, and how can it apply to a personal injury case? Here’s a closer look. THE “ACT OF GOD” DEFENSE If you’ve ever watched a news story that involves a person driving through a restaurant window or causing a highway crash when conditions are good (no bad weather and no driver impairment), you’ve probably witnessed a situation that could be defined as an act of God. Typically, these cases involve someone — we will use automobile accidents as a reference point here — who is driving and winds up causing a major accident through no apparent fault of their own. A driver might be hit by lightning, fall asleep at the wheel, have a seizure, be struck with an unknown medical condition, or have something else happen that was completely unforeseen. These things usually can’t be predicted, which is why they are determined to be acts of God. While this claim is one that is regularly used in such cases, it may not stand in every case, and a good lawyer can uncover the truth when this term is used wrongfully. WHAT AN ACT OF GOD IS NOT The law becomes complex when it comes to defining a true act of God. It may seem like an accident caused by brake failure would qualify, but this isn’t usually the case. If an accident could have been prevented (a car’s brakes
could have been checked and maintained), it shouldn’t be considered an act of God. If you have been in an accident that was not your fault, and you believe that the accident was a true act of God, you will need a good legal team that can make this claim stick. On the flip side, if you have been in an accident that was caused by someone else, and this person is making an act of God claim, you will benefit from having a strong legal team that can prove this claim to be false. Either way, the law can be on your side when it comes to unforeseen personal injury accidents. But this is one claim that’s difficult to decipher without a thorough review of your case. When it was time to submit her settlement demand, she asked if I thought she would pocket at least $1,000 so she would have first and last month’s rent to move into a nicer apartment for her son. I told her I hoped so, but I couldn’t make any promises. We were able to negotiate a settlement whereby she would pocket $10,000. When I called and told her, she cried so hard she couldn’t speak; she couldn’t even catch her breath. Vanilla Candy Cane Peppermint Bars
Ingredients • ¾ cup sugar (no sugar substitutes) • ⅓ cup canola oil • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 cup all-purpose flour • ½ teaspoon baking powder

• ½ teaspoon baking soda • ¼ teaspoon salt • ⅓ cup crushed peppermint candies • 3 ounces dark chocolate, melted
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with foil, extending foil over edges. Coat foil with cooking spray. 2. In a medium bowl, beat sugar, oil, egg, and vanilla with a mixer on medium for 2 minutes or until slightly thick and pale yellow. Beat in flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt just until combined. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the peppermint candies. Spread batter in the prepared pan. 3. Bake 20–25 minutes or until edges are puffed and top is golden. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Using foil, lift uncut bars out of the pan. Cut into bars. 4. Line a tray with parchment paper. Dip one corner of each bar into melted chocolate and place on the prepared tray. Sprinkle chocolate with the remaining peppermint candies. Let stand until set.

SANTA TRACKING GOES HIGH-TECH
which includes kid-friendly coding games, information on international holiday traditions, and a translation app to “learn the Santa lingo from around the world.” When the eve of the big day finally comes, Google promises a showcase of Santa’s “dashboard, the technology that powers his sleigh during his around-the-world journey.” Featuring “the latest and greatest … in sleigh engineering,” the app displays a Google Maps window that tracks each of Santa’s stops, gives status updates from Old Saint Nick, and tells kids how far he is from their city. It’s a colorful, fun adventure for the whole family. Of course, Google’s not the only kid on the Santa-tracking block. There’s also NORAD Tracks Santa, operated by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, the same organization that tracks nuclear missiles for the government. It’s almost Christmas, and if you have small kids, you know what that means: prepping for the arrival of a jolly man in a red suit and his confusingly named reindeer. Some of us may remember spending Christmas Eve curled on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa as radio reports tracked Santa’s trip around the globe. But these days, kiddos have gotten a little more high-tech in their search for up-to-date, GPS-driven Kringle updates. First, there’s the Google Santa Tracker (santatracker.google.com), a full-fledged holiday hub for your browser powered by Google Maps, including, of course, an up-to-the-minute GPS tracker for the big man. The application arrived in 2004, and it’s been updated every year since. During the countdown to Christmas, there’s a colorfully animated advent calendar of sorts, where buildings around Santa’s village “thaw out” and reveal a host of fun games and activities. There’s even a section titled “Santa Tracker for Educators,”
of fun games and activities leading up to Christmas. But unlike Google, NORAD has a dedicated Santa-tracking app for your phone, where you can see a 3-D view of Santa’s location during his trip. The app also features videos, so you and your little ones can see clips of Santa flying around major landmarks and world cities. Just don’t stay up too late watching them. You don’t want Santa to skip over your house!
