who had seen Him after. His resurrection. James, Peter, the apostles in a body, and “ five hundred brethren at once” had been with the risen Lord. Having seen Him, how could they doubt that “ this same Jesus” had died but rose again? Not only had they seen Him but they had also borne wit ness to the fact of His resurrection. Paul uses two cogent arguments for the validity of the resurrection. In the first plaice, “ If the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised” (v. 16). The next point follows naturally: “ And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain [fu tile]; ye are yet in your sins” (vs. 16, 17). T o deny the power of God to raise the dead is to dis credit Christ’s testimony that He did rise. Then, too, the apostles would be found false witnesses of God, for they had pro claimed that God had raised Christ. If this were not true, then they were arch liars. If God raised not Christ, they and all Christians have been most tragically de ceived and have clung to a phantom hope. Of what tremendous eternal import is this issue 1 All conjecture is needless, however, for the Lord Jesus Christ actually “was raised again for our justification”— raised that we might be looked upon as righteous in God’s sight because of Christ’s death in our stead. Upon supposition we need not depend, for the resurrection fact, the foundation stone of our faith, is the best authenticated event of all history. The blessed reality of a living Lord is the basis of our faith and teaching. His death changed the time sched ule of the world, and His resurrection de termined the eternal destiny of sinful human souls. “ Now is Christ risen from the dead and become the firstfruits of them that slept” (v. 20). Our hope is not an empty, vague mental illusion, but a gloriously at tested and triumphant certainty; because He lives,

A lady wa9 traveling with her maid and child. A wasp got into the carriage, and the child kept crying for it. At last the lady said to the servant, “What is the child crying for? Let him have it.” A few min utes later the lady was startled by an awful scream from the child, and exclaimed in alarm, “What’s the matter?” “ He has got it,” was the servant’s calm reply. So sometimes in His great wisdom, God allows us to have what we cry for, that we may feel the sting and the misery of it, and learn through pain and humiliation that God’s will and way are best.—A. C. D ixon . II. Y ielded Laid on Thine altar, O my Lord divine, Accept my gift this day for Jesus’ sake. I have no jewels to adorn Thy shrine, Nor any world-famed sacrifice to make; But here I bring within my trembling hand This will of mine, a thing that seemeth small ; And Thou alone, O Lord, canst understand How, when I yield Thee this, I yield Thee all. —S elected . III. O ur W ills W e very properly distinguish in ourselves two wills, the one of natural inclination, the instinctive will, if you please; the other, the deliberate purpose and choice of the moral and rational nature. Our first effort must be the complete surrender of our delib erate, rational will to God—to work ever in submission to His gracious ordering for our lives. Then the constant discipline of the Christian life becomes the stern struggle to subdue the will of natural inclination and to bring it a captive to our Lord. This is the gift we have to offer Him.—A. R itchie .

MARCH 28, 1937 EASTER: A BEGINNING, NOT AN END 1 C orinthians 15:12-17 Meditation on the Lesson

Brilliant and logical reasoning character ize this mighty resurrection chapter written by the Apostle Paul under the control of the Holy Spirit. Paul is showing that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is a certified credential authorizing the faith and func tion of the church. In the opening verses of this chapter, as in a court scene, he has summoned eye-witnesses of the Lord Jesus
