of summer, because summer will not last. But the joy of a life at rest in God’s love, of a life at peace in God’s will, of a life at work in God’s purpose—that is perfect joy. “M y joy in you ”—it is a permanent possession.—J ohn MacBEATH. MARCH 28 R isen! “ He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matt. 28:6). “ He is risen, as he said,” First-begotten of the dead, He whose precious blood was shed, Jesus Christ our Saviour. Risen, Victor in the fight, Conquered sin and hell’s dark night; Now He dwells in cloudless light, Jesus Christ our Saviour. “He is risen” ! Banish fear; Let this thought our spirits cheer; Soon for us He shall appear, Risen Lord and Saviour. —F. B u c k l e y . MARCH 29 Only Sleeping "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him” (1 Thess. 4:14). If we die with Christ and are buried in His death, we shall rise again to a new life here and in the world to come. As for death, we need not be afraid of it. For the

ing His lordship over them, seek truly to commit their way unto Him, is there not at times a subtle temptation to think that He ought to do the things that seem good to them ? Are we not all sometimes tempted to believe that we should be much happier if the Lord would order our circumstances just a little differently?—J. S o u t h e y . MARCH 26 Only One Worthy “ Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power" (Rev. 4:11). The Bible describes a God who is worthy of admiration, love, and worship, being self- existent, eternal, sinless, and compassionate. Other sacred books know no such God as this. Generally the one God gives place to many gods. These last are often man- created ; and frequently they are like unto men, with their loves and hates, their foibles and sins. In no case are they pitying in their intent and expression, sacrificially seek ing to win men to holiness and heaven, and revealing the way by which sin and sinning may be forever forgiven and forgotten. — H e n r y W . F rost . MARCH 27 The Joy o f Jesus in Us "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full” (John 15:11). In Jesus is profound, perpetual joy. It is not the joy of circumstances. It is not the joy of money, for Jesus was poor. It is not the joy of youth, because youth was past, as it will always pass. It was not the joy

address a father or a friend.”—From Pre vailing Prayer, by Zelma Argue.* MARCH 24 Costly Compassion "Y et it pleased the Lord to bruise him” (Isa. 53:10). Why does the Bible set a cross at the center of its revelation, and Incarnate Deity nailed to it as a voluntary victim? For Jesus did not die an unwilling victim of human malignity. . . . There is a tragedy in our fallen estate that calls for the tragedy of Calvary. The face of God is seared with pity and compassion for us. But those who see God’s face as it really is find their deepest solace in those lines of His suffer ing, for /they see the face of One who knows their hearts’ most secret depths, yet loves them without end.—J. F. T a v in e r . MARCH 25 No Exceptions! “ He hath done all things well” (Mk. 7:37). Much of our own heart unrest comes be cause there is the perhaps half-unconscious desire to have our own way rather than to let God have His. I am not now thinking of the self-will that makes its plans without any reference to the Lord, that never waits for His guidance, nor seeks to know His mind before acting—though Christians, lean ing to their own understanding, often do what seems right in their own eyes and then fret against God if their plans mis carry. But even with those who, recogniz- *Vsed by permission of the Zondervan Pub. House.
