HERRINGBONE & BEERS A SMASHING HIT
As soon as guests walked through the doors of our Newcastle Showroom, they were in for a lively night. Greeted by a glass of smooth craft beer, a motley group of builders, installers and shop fitters joined us for an evening dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge – just how to install the perfect herringbone timber floor. To kick off the night, local Cattleyard Brewing Co, presented an insightful look into the making of craft beer. With hardly a glass staying empty for too long, the good vibes and camaraderie were flowing just as quickly as the beers were being drunk and the satay chicken devoured. The showcase event for the night was delivered by the knowledgeable Shane Jones from Great Southern Floors. What followed Shane’s demonstration was a head-on-head (or should that be diagonal-on-diagonal?) herringbone timber installation competition. After a frantic race to the finish, the title of ‘Herringbone Champion’ was taken out by Greg Baker from BRW Constructions. Although considering the happy faces and full stomachs, we doubt there were any losers among us.
MAKING DESIGN FUN
At Havwoods, we’re committed to creating trends. The same ethos applies to our events. Firmly cementing its status as the need-to-know flooring supplier in town, our Newcastle Showroom welcomed several architects and designers to our “Playscape: Creative Thinking and the Design Process” event. Hosted alongside Polytec and the Hunter Design School, guests were divided into groups and asked to imagine a playground with daring play elements; a place where kids were awe-struck and challenged to overcome fear and conquer defeat. Attendees were provided with all the creative elements including markers, paper, Havwoods wooden tangram and block samples as well as two key words that would inform the theme of their playground. The experience was fun and encouraged people to interact with each other while creating something challenging and confronting. While difficult to choose an overall winner, it was the green team that proved victorious with their interesting take on a ‘Slightly Dangerous’ playscape.

A PAINTING SUCCESS
Early August, our Melbourne team hosted a successful Paint & Sip evening, helping bring out the inner Picasso (no matter how deeply buried) of a spirited group of architects and designers. With plenty of food and drink to warm up the evening, the trained artist encouraged a relaxed and judgement free savannah for our creativity to run wild. The brief for the night? To create a Picasso inspired self-portrait. The key ingredient? Wine! With no right or wrong course of action, it was intriguing to gain an insight into the personalities of fellow peers and colleagues as no two paintings were the
same. To colour things up throughout the night, we ran a ‘Spin the Brush’ activity where the lucky winner had a cocktail made after their name and favourite Havwoods timber colour - ‘Lindy Desert’ was a fruity palette of pineapple and coconut. We also awarded a prize for the Picasso MVP of the night. Congratulations to Regina who won the accolade – seventh person in the top row. It was clear that no matter the skill level, the artistic ability of even the biggest cynics was brought to the forefront.

AROUND THE GLOBE
SIDEWALK TORONTO - 21 ST CENTURY SUSTAINABILITY
A sustainable place with safer streets. More breathable air. More walkable sidewalks. A place where people are more engaged with their world than with their phones. A place that’s both inspiring and affordable. A place that’s welcoming for artists and entrepreneurs, for the creative class and the working class. A place where, quite simply, everyone who wishes to call it home, can.
10
AROUND THE GLOBE
SUSTAINABILITY ON A LARGE SCALE
All of the buildings in Quayside are planned to be built with sustainable mass timber through a modular, factory-based construction process. This approach would help catalyse an Ontario- based industry focused on sustainable construction and building technologies. Flexible Loft spaces are designed to accommodate a mix of residential and non-residential uses that can evolve to meet the neighbourhood’s changing needs. The Quayside plan would result in a low-carbon, resilient neighbourhood with a significant number of environmental innovations, including sustainable building materials and designs, an advanced power grid for electricity, a clean thermal grid for heating and cooling, a smart disposal chain designed to increase recycling, and active stormwater management.
11
AROUND THE GLOBE
SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS THAT CAN BE CONSTRUCTED AND ADAPTED FAR MORE QUICKLY, AND A NEW SET OF FINANCIAL AND DESIGN TOOLS THAT HELP IMPROVE AFFORDABILITY AND EXPAND OPTIONS FOR ALL HOUSEHOLDS.
Quayside’s innovative approach to buildings and housing would create a neighbourhood that is more inclusive and responsive to community needs. The plan calls for mass timber buildings that are just as strong and fire-resistant as steel or concrete but dramatically more sustainable. Mass timber parts would be produced in an Ontario-based factory, accelerating project timelines by up to 35 percent without compromising safety or design excellence. An ambitious affordability program targets 40 percent of units for below-market housing.
12
WOOD BOOK
Flexible wall systems and efficient unit designs help create a range of options for families, single-person households, the elderly, and other groups currently hoping to live downtown. Quayside would feature a set of efficient and ultra-efficient units that reduce size to enable affordability while remaining livable through thoughtful design features, such as space- saving furniture, shared building amenities, and access to off-site storage space with on-demand delivery. Quayside plan would create a nearly carbon neutral neighbourhood that cuts greenhouse gases by 85 percent from the city average. It would achieve this outcome through a series of
innovations that include relying on clean energy sources for heating and cooling; optimising energy consumption using digital technology; designing energy-efficient buildings that meet the Toronto Green Standard Tier 3; increasing recycling with a smart disposal chain; and deploying an active stormwater management system. Through these initiatives, Quayside would set a new standard of sustainability that takes the first steps towards a climate-positive community on the waterfront.

TECH SAVVY SPACES
Microsoft, one of the world’s largest technology companies, engaged Tom Mark Henry (TMH) to help them realise their first Flagship Technology Centre in Australia. Located above the iconic GPO in Sydney’s bustling Martin Place, the brief was to represent the global Microsoft brand whilst reflecting the project’s distinct Sydney context and site. The space needed to host a myriad of different demographics, from children to CEOs, and seamlessly cater for these diverse requirements with a complex spatial plan. A focus on the natural beauty of the Australian landscape was fundamental to this project and explored using bold textures, colours and forms – including the choice of timber flooring. To differentiate the multi-purpose spaces, TMH selected Havwoods Clermont Pureplank for the kitchen areas and opted for Parky Ivory Oak Twist for several of the staff
touchdown zones. The timber flooring complemented the other material choices and enabled TMH to create a cohesive aesthetic which was carried throughout the space. The space celebrates all facets of its Australian context, not only the physical forms but also looking deeper at the built environment as well as the less tangible qualities of the local culture, language and design community; local artists were also engaged to create unique design elements throughout the space, embracing and celebrating the design culture within Australia.

Michael and Kristine Hansen had a dream to create an off-the-grid sustainable sanctuary that combined the allure of Australian craftsmanship with the simplicity of Danish design and life. Every dream requires a setting and for Michael and Kristine it was embodied in the out-of-the-way area known as Turon Gates, situated right behind the nationally treasured Blue Mountains and only a short distance from the Capertree Valley. For inspiration, they turned their gaze to the humble barn. With water regularly pumped from the nearby Turon River and solar power throughout the entire home, their sustainability ethos is quite literally evident from the floor up. Our reproduction reclaimed timber flooring in Relik Dryden was placed on the floor throughout the entire home, it was used to add rustic character to several feature walls, and it was placed on the sliding doors of each room. With no mobile phone coverage, access to the internet or television in the home, it allows the family, who have two sons, to truly immerse themselves in the present moment. Instead of Netflix in the evening, the family enjoy the wonders of the night by stargazing without leaving the house. “It’s stress-free and you just feel more connected to yourself and each other,” Kristine explains. Where to next for Michael and Kristine? “Now that it’s finished, it’s really nice to be together and do the things we want, like going for long walks and just talking to each other more...There is something different about the time up here, it really slows you down,” says Kristine.
It’s time for them to live their dream.

FASHION FORWARD
The design of the 100sqm Melbourne boutique is underpinned by qualities of strength and beauty providing a confident and layered environment to showcase the collection. A sense of craftsmanship translates from the product into the store; the journey is punctuated by considered and carefully edited detail throughout. The material palette is focused on a nuanced collection of soft textural hues, with depth and weight added through timber, stone and carefully selected colour accents including a series of custom coloured ombré glass panels. Made in Europe, Havwoods Pallido Block from the Italian Collection provided the base for the layering of tonal and textural details while complementing the overall palette.
Inspired by the intricate floors of Italy, the Italian Collection is comprised of narrower, thinner planks, chevron and herringbone blocks which provide more flexibility for laying in complex patterns or mixing with tiles in other materials.

CENTRAL PARK ROAD, MALVERN EAST, VIC
When embarking on a design journey, the initial client conversation often sets the tone for the build or renovation. It is where designers and architects flex their listening muscles. James Woodford, Director & Designer at F3 Studio is a stalwart believer in ‘listen attentively and then speak’ and worked closely with his clients to better understand their design vision for the Malvern East Residence. “Our brief was to partially renovate an existing Edwardian home, extending the footprint to improve the function of the kitchen while adding a new pantry, laundry and powder room – all concealed behind secret doors,” James explains. While each space radiates charm, it’s the kitchen that achieves true MVP status. The clients quickly realised that “nothing came close to achieving the warmth and texture HOME OF VERSATILITY
of the Venture Plank Medio product. Aesthetics aside, the chosen boards also have an excellent wear layer and a stable cross laminated base. The quality is obvious,” James describes. Havwoods Medio was laid on a section of the floor and used as timber cladding for the ‘secret door’ and the ceiling – creating a warm timber flooring cocoon. The result is a home that stays true to the traditional idiosyncrasies of an Edwardian era home while infusing notes of modernity and functionality.

Using more wood is good for your buildings and your planet – every cubic metre of wood used as a substitute for other building materials reduces CO 2 emissions by, on average, 1.1 tonnes. You can also find out all you need to know about the processes used in production and our grading criteria.

SUSTAINABILITY
PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY
Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. However, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. The earth’s atmosphere is not the only casualty of deforestation. 70% of the world’s plants and animals live in forests and are loosing their habitats to this destruction. This in turn has an adverse effect on local populations. Trees are also vital to the water cycle and in halting soil erosion. Aiding local populations to gain socially and economically by preserving their forests instead of destroying them, is the task of international non- profit organisations like the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC ® ). The FSC’s mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests, directly or indirectly addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming, and with positive effects on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment. Other international organisations you will find referenced in this publication are the PEFC™ (Program of the endorsement of Forest Certification), who concentrate on ensuring that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. The Cradle to Cradle Products innovation institute (administrator for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program) which addresses issues from a different angle, educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment. Look for FSC ® certified products throughout this Wood Book.
Opting to use more wood is undeniably good for both the individual and the environment. Just make sure that the wood you use is the right wood.

MAKING THE GRADE
MAKING THE GRADE
Since there is no international standard for timber grades, at Havwoods we have established our own, shown here on oak planks. Please do remember that boards are usually selected by eye and that these parameters are simply a guideline.
GENERAL GRADING CRITERIA
SELECT Known as either select or classic grade, typically this will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots. Slightly larger knots are allowed in this grade. Heartwood and colour variation in the timber should be expected and there may be some checks (cracks across the growth ring), sapwood and filler. The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.
PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood defects and filler, if any at all. Where filler is used its colour is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and the colour of the filler may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.
RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be colour variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.
CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of colour variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). Filler will be used, the colour of which is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and it may vary from batch to batch.

GRADING AND TECHNIQUES
CHARACHTERISTICS AND TECHNIQUES
SMOKING & FIRING
SINGLE SMOKED
DOUBLE SMOKED
FIRED
Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the lamella timber is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The colouration is surface deep only and, unlike staining, a smoked tone will vary from plank to plank. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.
SAPWOOD & TREATMENT
SMOKED & WHITE OILED
SMOKED
NATURAL OILED
Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood, and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise it since it doesn’t react to these treatments to the same degree. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.
38
WOOD BOOK
KNOTS & FILLERS
WHITE
GREY
BROWN
BLACK
A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: white, grey, brown and black are shown above.
MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES
These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.
39
PATTERNS & FINISHES
PATTERNS
There are various different types of designs or patterns available. Standard plank is the most common style but you may decide on something more interesting like a block or herringbone.
PLANK
CHEVRON
This is sometimes known as strip flooring and is available in many different lengths and widths.
Chevron is a V shaped pattern, often inverted and symmetrical.
HERRINGBONE/BLOCK
Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘Basket Weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

VERSAILLES
BENEFITS OF ENGINEERED PROFILES
• Very stable construction, ideal for wider boards • The wear layer on many engineered is similar to solid boards • Mostly suitable for use with underfloor heating • The majority of unique finishes are supplied on engineered boards • Engineered boards are strighter, allowing easy glue down installations
Sumptuous style in modern, easy-to-install preassembled panels
FINISHES
LACQUERED
OILED
UV CURED HARDWAX OIL
This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden floor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.
Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the floor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled floors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

HW691 NATURE HERRINGBONE (P57), BRAHMA LODGE HOTEL, SA
DESIGN FROM HAVWOODS Our collection of herringbone blocks and Versailles pattern wood flooring. Pre-finished and unfinished blocks can be used to create classic herringbone, basket weave and tumbling dice patterns; or select the ready-made Versailles pattern panels. Click System Herringbones are available in four colours – Aintree, Ascot, Bath and Cheltenham. Simple to lay, the interlocking system is extremely fast to install as a fully bonded floor.
Havwoods recommend a further coat of oil on all natural oiled products after installation. Product photography should only be used as a guide to colour and grading. Due to the size of the image together with the printing process and screen resolutions these should not be taken as a true representation of your floor. Variations to images will occur in both colour and grading. Please contact us for more information. *Conditions apply for underfloor heating.
