CONTRACTS CANCELLED FOR SOLAR PROJECTS

L’ancien conseiller municipal, l’homme d’affaires Mario Laplante, souhaite re- prendre une place à la table du conseil du Village de Casselman le 22 octobre prochain. « C’est un retour en politique parce que je trouve que le conseil actuel a besoin de renouveau et je crois que je peux aider à la situation », a-t-il déclaré, lors d’un entretien avec notre journal. Il dit souhaiter davantage de transpa- rence de la part du conseil. « Présentement, comme contribuable, je trouve que ce n’est pas assez… je voudrais que ce soit plus ouvert au public et plus transparent. Je pense que c’est important que les gens soient mis au courant et je pense que les réunions de conseil devraient être plus ouvertes ». Il reproche au conseil actuel de n’accep- ter, en réunion, que les questions touchant les thèmes abordés dans l’ordre du jour. « Avec une ouverture d’esprit d’un futur conseil, je pense qu’on devrait être capable de répondre aux questions des contribuables sur n’importe quel sujet. Sans nécessaire- ment avoir les réponses immédiatement, mais de prendre les questions en note et d’y répondre à une prochaine réunion. Un élu devrait être au courant des préoccupations des contribuables », a-t-il ajouté. M. Laplante souhaiterait que chaque élu devienne en quelque sorte spécialiste de certains départements, pour être en mesure de bien connaître les dossiers et ensuite être en mesure de répondre adéquatement aux questions citoyennes. « C’est sûr qu’on est élu, on n’est pas l’administration, mais il faut que les élus soient au courant », estime-t-il. Laplante dit vouloir ap- puyer tout promoteur qui souhaite construire à Casselman. « Il faut leur donner toute l’information nécessaire, rendre tous les agents qui travaillent dans le domaine dis- ponibles et trouver des solutions pour quand vient le temps de financer. N’importe quelle construction, c’est de la création d’emploi. Il faut aider au lieu de présenter ça comme un mur administratif. » Mario Laplante est convaincu que son expérience en tant qu’homme d’affaires et bénévole au sein de la communauté sera profitable à Casselman. Rickford also stated that the gov- ernment will introduce legislation to pro- tect ratepayers from the costs of any legal fallout from the contract cancellations. Local project contracts The biggest project contract in the Prescott-Russell region hit by the mass cancellation is the one for the Eastern Fields wind farm project proposed for The Nation Municipality and Champlain Town- ship as reported in the July 18 editions of the Tribune-Express and Reflet-News . Eight proposed solar projects for the Alfred-Plantagenet Township area are also affected by the provincial government’s decision. They include a municipal solar project at the township sewage treatment lagoon, three small solar setups in the Village of Curran proposed by ML Solar Projects LP, two projects of ASM Solar LP in the villages of Alfred and Plantagenet, and one in the township for Sunny Curran LP. Also hit by contract cancellations are two biogas projects for local farm opera- tions in near the Village of Lefaivre in Alfred-Plantagenet Township and near the Village of Casselman.
More than half a dozen small-scale “green energy” projects may not be going ahead as planned in Alfred- Plantagenet Township because of a mass cancellation of alternate energy contracts by the new Progressive Conservative government. The lights went out for 758 renewable energy projects in Ontario when Greg Rick- ford, the new Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, announced July 13 that the Progressive Conservative gov- ernment was cancelling their contracts. The decision follows up on an election campaign promise of Doug Ford, Ontario’s new premier, to reduce Hydro rates by 12 per cent through a variety of cost-cutting measures. All of the projects listed in the mass- cancellation of contracts had not yet reached their “project development milestones” according to the government news release. Both Rickford and Ford have claimed the cancelled contracts represent $790 million in combined savings for
