early, or contact the artist to reserve a spot, as the request list always fills very quickly. Attendees will also have an opportunity to get free autographs and purchase comic books at greatly reduced prices. When asked why he selected Refuge RR as his main recipient, Eaglesham answered, “I prefer to support charities that don’t have a high profile and that don’t have the mas- sive fund-raising structure seen in large charitable organizations. When I visited the refuge, I was blown away by the compas- sion shown towards these beautiful animals that have been abandoned or abused. In a society that can be so cruel, once animals have outlived their usefulness, especially with farm stock and horses, this is a vital ref- uge for the most vulnerable among us.” Eaglesham is a veteran comic book illus- trator who has been working in the industry since 1986. He has worked with Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse and CrossGen, among DUNVEGAN | Images from yesterday are the focus of a new exhibit at the Glen- garry Pioneer Museum that opens its 51 st season Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. The Dunvegan museum will be open all three days of the Victoria Day Weekend until 5 p.m. May is Museum Month and to mark the occasion, the North Glengarry attraction has developed a new special exhibit, “Por- traits from the Past.” It will explore the vari- ous techniques and media of portraiture, from grand paintings to small, studio tin- types, from 1860 to 1920, as found in the museum’s collection. Curator Jennifer Black explains, “Having one’s likeness captured in paint or a pho- tograph was a big deal in the 19 th century. Most individuals, other than wealthy ones, would only have one image of themselves. To make certain that there was a lasting remembrance of a loved one, some of the portraits were even taken near or after death.” TRIBUNE-EXPRESS NEWSROOM@EAP.ON.CA

VANKLEEK HILL| Comic book industry veteran Dale Eaglesham returns to the Vankleek Hill May Show Festival this weekend with his Comics for Charity (C4C) event. The 2008 winner of the Shuster Award for Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Art- ist of the year, Eaglesham will be in atten- dance May 18 and 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a booth on Main Street, which is closed to traffic for the event. In case of rain, the show will move to the Community Centre at 36 Mill St. The 6th annual C4C event will raise funds for its main recipient, Refuge RR for Horses, along with Friends of Feral Cats Hawkes- bury and other animal welfare causes. Fans will not want to miss this chance to chat with the current Iron Man artist in this first of only two public appearances in 2013. Last year’s Comics for Charity event raised over $5,000 for Refuge RR for Horses, thanks to the support of local fans as well as those travelling from as far as Toronto and Québec City. The biggest seller at C4C 2012 was Eaglesham’s limited-edition poster of Spider-Man swinging across Vankleek Hill’s Higginson Tower. For this year’s event, the artist is preparing another limited-edition poster of a famous comic-book character at a well-known local site. As part of the fundraising activities, Ea- glesham will be doing superhero sketches in exchange for donations, with the size and complexity of the drawings matching that of the donation. Black continues, “The Pioneer Museum has an extensive collection of paintings and photographs of former Glengarrians that have been donated by surviving family members. This is an opportunity to display some of those ancestors while also demon- strating the variety of early techniques and approaches to portraiture.” Visitors also will have the opportunity to explore what pioneer village life might have been like in the 1800s through exhibits rep- resenting early agriculture, a one-room school, trapping, a general store, a doctor’s office, women’s roles, and the creation of cloth. As always, the gift shop will be open with its supply of unique gifts and locally made goods. A full slate of activities is planned for the 2013 season, including the Historical Driv- ing Tour June 16, a special 1812 storytelling evening titled “Battlefield Petticoats” June 21, a “What’s It Worth?
