Area farmers had been taking advantage of dry conditions to get back onto the land. A pleasant surprise awaited Champlain Township officials when they opened tenders on a contract to upgrade a sewage pumping station. All three bids received on the job were below the $524,400 budgeted for the improvements. ARNCO Construction, of Hawkesbury, had the lowest bid, $407,500. ASCO Construction, also of Hawkesbury, submitted a price of $490,447 and LouisW. Bray Construction Ltd., of St. Andrew’sWest, bid $497,440. A business owner recently gave the Hawkesbury Fire Department a large training tool – a house. Bill Papanagiotis, owner of L’Escale Restaurant, has donated an abandoned residence to the fire department so members can keep improving their fire-fighting skills. The vacant structure, situated to the west of his restaurant, will soon be demolished to create more parking space. Papanagiotis made the gesture as his way of contributing to the safety of the community.
