Both the Upper Canada District School Board and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario expressed relief on their websites, at the last-moment deal over the October 6 weekend. «The Board is extremely pleased that a deal was reached between CUPE, the Govern- ment of Ontario, and the Council of Trustees’ Associations yesterday evening,” stated Todd Lalonde, chairman for the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, in an email. “A full withdrawal of services on behalf of CUPE employees would have been extremely unfortunate for our school community, and we are thankful that strike action was averted, and that all parties were able to resolve the outstanding issues. We know that everyone worked toward a suc- cessful deal with the best interests of our students in mind.” “We look forward to welcoming our staff and our students back to school,” stated

Provincial government officials and representatives for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) were engaged in a final round of negotiations over the October 6 weekend, to resolve issues over a new contract for school support workers. Failure to achieve agreement would have meant schools across all Ontario closing because of a strike. Three hours before Sunday’s midnight deadline, the two sides came to agreement on a possible new contract, which still needs ratification by union members later this month.
