What Can Physical Therapy Do to Help? Physical therapy is not a one-stop cure-all for pain management. This is a long-term solution to pain and suffering through the use of targeted exercises and stretching techniques that are designed to strengthen the targeted areas and help the body recover and heal. By identifying the exact points on the body that are not moving as they ought to be, it is possible to make a plan to increase flexibility, motion, strength and even improve coordination. Your hips and knees are essential to everyday movement; whether you are sitting, standing, walking or running, you need your hips and knees in great shape. Sometimes, when your hips and knees are in pain, it can cause you to change the way that you are moving, causing you to change the flow and pace of your gait, which is the way that you walk. Other times, prolonged pain can cause you to stop doing movements that are indicative of healthy joints.

Mark Twain once said that growing old is an issue of “mind over matter,” but if you struggle with knee or hip pain, then you know that this isn’t true at all. Hip and knee pain can really take the spring out of your step, causing you to move slower and leaving you with pain that becomes more difficult to cope with, step after step. There is an endless list of reasons as to why knee or hip pain may develop, from a slip or fall-related accident to a sports injury or even a car accident. Don’t Wait Until It Is Too Late! When an injury develops, seeking the support of a physical therapist is the best course of action. Working with a physical therapist soon after an injury develops can help reduce your recovery time and improve your ability to cope with the pain and discomfort by introducing you to targeted exercises and stretching techniques that can enhance your ability to recover from the injury. When you are dealing with a hip or knee injury, every step requires more effort than typical. This can really drain your energy level as you attempt to go about doing even basic tasks, such as taking care of your home or walking around the office.

SAFELY REACH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Don’t forget the past! You may feel like a brand new, rejuvenated person in the new year, but your body undoubtedly hasn’t received that message. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is pushing yourself too fast and too soon. Let’s say you make a resolution to start taking morning runs in 2019. That’s great! However, if your body hasn’t been used to running in the past, you need to ease yourself into it. Your mindset may be focused on your marathon goal, but your body isn’t there yet. Start slow, perhaps with a half-mile jog around the neighborhood, then start pushing yourself to a mile, then two, then three. The gradual increase will make it much easier on your body (and a much easier resolution to keep!) than diving right in will. Starting off with that three mile run may feel liberating in the beginning, but your body will curse you after. The new year can bring great changes, but don’t forget the past.

Stay on top: Even if your resolution doesn’t leave you feeling achy or painful (and we hope it doesn’t!), we can still help you maintain your peak physical performance. Southern California Aquatic & Physical Therapy uses advanced methods and technology, such as injury prevention screening, gait analysis, and mobility evaluation to determine what exercises and therapies would work best for aiding in your physical excellence. We can help make sure you stay on top, avoiding any potential pain or injury. Additionally, you will have a team of supporters to encourage your goals and celebrate your achievements along the way! To meet one of our physical therapists and discuss how we can help you safely reach your resolutions, schedule a consultation today.

3 Healthy Tips For The New Year

1. Shop Well For Yourself - It is more important then ever to stock your kitchen with healthy foods. Have healthy snacks handy. The more convenient they are, the more likely you are to eat them. Instead of thinking about what you shouldn’t eat, promise to eat your 3 to 5 servings of vegetables each day. 2. Schedule Your Exercise - Your schedule will be very hectic this year, like every year. Schedule your workouts just as you would any other appointment. It’s okay if you can’t make it to class, but make sure that you get some activity in at least three days per week. 3. Hydrate - Keep your water bottle with you at all times. You should be drinking eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. One handy trick is to buy a 64 ounce water jug. Fill it up in the morning and know that you need to finish it by the end of the day.

“I have been going to Southern California Aquatic and Physical Therapy for over 2 months. On my first visit, Steven gave me an introduction and explained the aquatic and home exercises. The physical therapist and staff are friendly and knowledgeable and make sure you are doing your exercises correctly. This is the first time I have tried pool therapy, it has worked for me! No impact exercise has made my back stronger with no pain. From the front desk, therapy aides and all the physical therapist, they are great! I would highly recommend Southern California Aquatic and Physical Therapy.” - William R. “They are great!”
