Earth Mothers praise Mother Earth Day in drum and song

gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Orléans

“As one we walk this earth together As one we sing to her our song As one we love here As one we heal with her Her heart beats with our own as one As one we join with her, our mother As one we feel her sacred song As one we touch her As one we heal with her Her heart beats with our own as one.” Orléans Ward 1 Coun. Bob Monette, a local champion for the Petrie Island project and other neighbourhood environmental programs and issues, headed the list of guest speakers for the day. He called on both participants in the day’s program and all other residents of Orléans and neighbouring communities to think about

celebrating the Earth Day spirit all year round and not just on one particular day. “What we have to start doing,” he said, “is realizing that the environment is im- portant. We should always be having the mind-set to clean up what we do, not just one day in the year, or one week, or one month. If everyong will do their little bit of a share, it will benefit future generations.” The Earth Mothers drumming group organized the April 22 Earth Day program at Petrie Island, bring in a variety of spea- kers including Emma Lui of the Council of Canadians and the National Water Campaign, Tito Medina, a Mayan elder from Guatemala and renowned spiritual drummer, and representatives for the OTESHA Project (www.otesha.ca), which works with youth and groups to foster positive community action. Workshops offered during the day included one on drum-making and drumming, traditional teachings on ecology and environmental awareness, permaculture for beginners, and how to give a greater role to solar power in the average household.

Earth Day in Eastern Ontario dawned grey and grim, cold and cloudy. But on Petrie Island, in the nature park, near Orléans, there were sunny smiles on all the faces of everyone gathering to the sound of the drums to celebrate on a Sunday morning. “It is a time find our way back to a path that is balanced and in harmony with the earth,” said Francine Payer, spokeswoman for the Earth Mothers drum-carriers. For the opening ceremony, Payer read aloud an email from singer-songwriter Denean(www.denean.com),whosemystic “As One” served as the overall theme for the event.
