possible, a large bucket or two of sand or dirt. Make sure to first prune any hanging tree branches up to a height of two metres or more. Remove all deadfall trees, limbs, branches, leaves, and needles at least 10 metres distance from the house and any outbuildings. Do not leave any firewood piles against the side of the house or other building. Do not work alone. Have at least two people involved in a controlled burn so that the fire is under constant watch. Never leave a fire site unattended until certain that the flames are extinguished and there are no smouldering embers. When doing the actual burn, keep the area on fire small. Do not try to “save time” by starting several fires at different points in a large yard and then expect to be able to keep them all under control. Mark out areas where a controlled burn is needed and do them one at a time, making sure the fire is extinguished in one area before moving on to do another. When the controlled burn is done for all of the yard, hose it down well or else set up a yard sprinkler to water each area for at least half an hour.

The township’s fire department fielded several calls over the April 14 weekend, almost all of them involving situations where a simple grass fire burned out of control and into the nearby brush. Homeowners are advised to check first with their local village office or town hall about municipal regulations on open fires and burn permits. Next is to check weather conditions for the day for burning grass and other yard debris. Do not light any fires on windy days. Best is a cool, cloudy day. Before lighting a fire, make sure to have a garden hose with a spray attachment handy and with the tap already turned on. Also have a rake and shovel ready and, if

Soon now the first chance to fill up after leaving Ottawa and heading east through Prescott-Russell will be a new Shell station going up next door to the Clarence-Rockland Medical Clinic at the intersection of County 17 and Chamberland Street. Work crews are preparing the excavation for the foundation and the burial sites for the underground gasoline storage tanks. The service station will also feature a Mac’s Milk as its in-store outlet.

The Best of Everything...Even Walkouts! A walkout or daylight basement floorplan is a plan for a lot that slopes. These plans provide access to the rear yard from the basement level. A walkout is highly desirable, adds value, natural light and much more living space. Best of all, a Woodfield home in Morris Village offers great value: comparable homes in Ottawa are at least $90,000 more. When others invite you to compare... we accept the challenge! After all...seeing is believing.
