TESTS AND AWARDS

JAM

Our bikes are subjected to the most rigorous tests. We test them to their limits under the harshest conditions – both in the laboratory and on the road and the trail. As passionate bikers ourselves, we only design bikes that we ourselves would want to ride. But don‘t just take our word for it – a large amount of positive feedback and success in independent tests underscore the fact that we must be doing something right. Read for yourself what the press has to say about our bikes.

„It responds immediately and agil in challenging terrain. Verdict: The new JAM fights in the battle for the best and most versatile mountain bike.“ BIKES WORLD, NO. 40, 01 / 17

as and viable project sketches. However, the majo- rity of these visions never make it off the drawing board. Concepts with no practical implementation are not open to assessment. Drawings are easier to visualise, but a ridable model is the only way of truly evaluating an e-bike. That’s why the PROJECT Y always also looks finished, even though it’s actually still in the prototype phase. After all, a test ride reveals the faults and issues that we cannot see in drawings. Despite everything, it is an ongoing project and we would like to invite you to get involved and provide us with your feedback. The PROJECT Y concepts don’t strictly ever have to make it to mass production... but they can, if they rouse enough interest.

PROJECT Y is our platform for the electric future. A playground for innovations and a forum where dreams are the topic of conversation. Here is whe- re we showcase what is possible. Designs and ideas conceived by passionate cyclists – our engineers and product managers. We offer approaches wi- thout strict definitions. The Y in PROJECT Y stands for ‚Why‘: Why is the current technology going in only one direction? We scrutinise the developments in our industry and blaze new trails when the cycling industry is already following established well-tra- velled routes. We want to inspire, collect feedback and encourage discussion. The right arm of the Y symbolizes the new paths we are taking. The actual implementation of the project plays a decisive role in this respect. In the past, we have seen a wealth of ideas concerning e-bikes – both futuristic utopi-

assistance only kicks in when you really need it. On slopes, off-road or when setting off – whenever it‘s possible to eke out a little more. In all other respects, the PROJECT Y offers the same ride characteristics as a standard racing bike. There is no pedal resistance. At less than 12 kg, the bike is really light and fast. Wherever weight becomes an issue (e.g. going uphill), the drive kicks in and as- sists you with up to 400 watts of additional power. The assistance feels completely natural at 25 km/h and you get the very best out of your ride. The fu- ture of racing bikes offers maximum performance in every situation.

Ever since its initial conception, the racing bike has always been a symbol of humanity’s aspirations for top performance. It unites the age-old longing for speed with the technological progress of performan- ce sports equipment bringing record performances to the streets. This is exactly where our focus lies, but we are blazing a new trail. When the bike is considered separately from the ri- der’s performance, potential is lost. When it comes to top performance, it is essential for man and ma- chine to function as one. We want maximum per- formance at all times and on every leg of the ride, so we are integrating an electric motor to provide assistance in those critical situations. However, the

SQUARED EXPERIENCE

NEW PRODUCT, DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY DIMENSIONS

SQUARED EXPERIENCE is our answer to the question of our e-bikes’ range. SQUARED EXPERIENCE means that you can experience so much more with our e-bikes: whether you’re riding uphill or down- hill – and uphill again. The SQUARED EXPERIENCE precisely pro- vides the right range to suit your needs. But it also includes the flexibility of adapting the range to your tour. Above all else, howe- ver, it promises maximum riding fun. Because we believe that’s always the top priority. And for that very reason, we don’t follow conventions, so we don’t have to compromise on our e-bikes’ ride characteristics.

REVOLUTIONARY PRODUCTS We’ve revolutionised the topic of electric mountain bikes with our JAM² and FOCUS BOLD² models. The Tailored Energy Concept (see T.E.C., page 28) means you’re only ever carrying as much energy as you need. Both the battery and the motor are perfectly integ- rated in the frame, and they do not affect the ride characteristics in any way. The innovative electric mountain bikes have been crowned the winner of several tests. The clear message from all the reviews was that no electric mountain bike offers as agile and dynamic a ride as the JAM² does.

OurFactorySpec isaspecificmodelwithin a bike family that a FOCUS employee has equipped to his or her specifications. Our employees are enthusiastic cyclists. They have big plans year in, year out, and spend a lot of time in the saddle. They have fine-tuned their Fac- tory Spec model specifically for such biking adventures – and the end result is such great value for money that they’d happily recom- mend it to their best mates too. The special design is the jewel in the crown of the Fac- tory Spec model.

„The day is still young. I get an early start in Reykjavik. I‘m on my way heading south-east. Solid tarmac as far as the eye can see. But after 120 kilometres, it gets a bit mono-

tonous; I think I was simply born for more bumpy ground. Luckily, the PARALANE is with me on this front. I turn off the road at the Seljalands- foss waterfall. There‘s a dirt track in

front of me, and mountains on the horizon. Beams of light fall from the clouds, lighting up green and white spots that join up to form a mosaic. I push on. My PARALANE Factory – just as adventurous as me myself.“ Jeremy Powers, FOCUS Athlet

HOW IT ALL STARTED...

Even at the beginning of his career, Mike Kluge was sure of one thing: the right bike is crucial to health, fun and success. For this reason, he felt critical feedback on material was just as much a part of his responsibility towards sponsors as winning races. Because any improvements seemed to take an eternity, he decided to take mat- ters into his own hands. At the time, he had won countless German champion

ships and two world champion titles in Cyclo Cross at amateur level. Howe- ver, in 1990, when he lost the unofficial mountain bike world champion title in Italy as a result of a defect in the mate- rial, it was time to make changes.

manufacturers. For a while his professi- onal career took a back seat, with brand rights and development devouring huge amounts of time and money. And while giving up simply wasn‘t an option, the dream of getting back to the top of the cycling profession was never far from his thoughts.

No sooner said, than done: in 1992, Mike Kluge won the professional wor- ld champion title in Leeds (GB) on a Cy- cloCross bike that he had put together himself. His maxim was now or never. On the back of this success, he founded the bike brand FOCUS with his friend Hans-Jörg Furrer in the Black Forest in Germany. As a successful professional cyclist on the road, track, in Cyclo Cross, downhill, and on a mountain

And his tenacity paid off. His new, self-made bikes were hugely success- ful and in 1993, Mike Kluge won two mountain bike World Cups for FOCUS with many more titles to follow. But 1993 also saw another milestone: the sale of the first FOCUS bike, the birth of FOCUS as a bike manufacturer.

bike, he was able to leverage his exten- sive knowledge of the advantages of the various bike types and incorporate them into other areas. The branding was in spired by the autofocus of a camera that hones in on the centre of an object. From then on, he focussed exclusively on the development of bicycle frames, the correct combination of components and close co-operation with local part

In 1994, Mike Kluge started his own FOCUS team, which included Jörg Arenz, Tobias Nestle and Jens Reuker, who still help shape the company. A new brand – and a rising star – was born, a star that continues to rise to this day.

Their ambition as a team to achieve the best in design, build and material was the driving force, then and now. Innova- tion plays a key role – as demonstrated by the pioneering SQUARED EXPERIENCE – a development that is a labour of love for Mike Kluge.

F.O.L.D FOCUS OPTIMIZED LINKAGE DESIGN MAXIMUMWHEEL CONTROL IN EVERY SITUATION

However, the perfect interplay of MAIN- LINK and GUIDELINK – the main compo- nents of F.O.L.D. – does not ensure the optimum functionality of the kinematics alone. A further key aspect is the chassis -flex of the rear triangle, already well- known from the world of motor sport. The chassis flex is of huge importance: for example, the rear wheel often loses traction in rough curves because the suspension can only absorb vertical im- pacts. Thanks to the optimised F.O.L.D. stiffness of the rear triangle, the rear wheel is able to generate enough tracti- on in spite of transverse impacts. Result: the bike offers a much gentler ride. The precise optimisation of the rear triang- le is not just calculated at the computer, but is primarily the result of many test ri- des across a wide range of terrains. This deliberate chassis flex has been well es- tablished in the world of motor sport for many years and is a key component in the race to shave seconds off performances. With F.O.L.D., we use this knowledge to good effect – for you. „WHILE SMALL BUMPS AND DIPS ARE ABSORBED AS IF BY A SPONGE, THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM OFFERS IMPRESSIVE RESERVES, THANKS TO THE RE- SPECTIVE END PROGRESSION.“

OPTIMISED RIDING DYNAMICS Shocks, linkages and bearings are arran- ged as low and centrally as possible over the bottom bracket. The resulting low and central centre of gravity maximises dyna- mic and agile handling, without making the bike seem nervous – in particular when it comes to technically demanding terrain and curves. And this is one advantage of F.O.L.D. that you will feel after just a few metres in the saddle. All bearings are also arranged centrally in the main frame, protecting them against mud and dirt.

The precise functioning of the rear suspension is crucial for the design of a full suspension bike. It has a significant impact on the ride characteristics of the bike and is its core component. With its proprietary F.O.L.D. (FOCUS OPTIMIZED LINKAGEDESIGN) kinematics, FOCUS has developed and patented a rear triangle system that offers seve- ral advantages and can be used for all full-suspen- sion FOCUS mountain bikes; Enduro, All-Mountain, Trail or Cross Country – it doesn’t matter.

The design of F.O.L.D. is such that the suspension travel is divided into two phases. In the first phase, the characteristic curve of the rear triangle is degres- sive: the suspension responds extremely sensitively and absorbs even the smallest of bumps and dips, which produces the noticeable extra traction, com- pared to other rear triangle systems, that is typical of our F.O.L.D. system. In the second phase, the characteristic curve is pro- gressive in order to offer sufficient control even with stronger impacts, as well as prevent rim damage. Thanks to F.O.L.D., the suspension travel of the rear triangle feels longer than it is and ensures the rider has full control in any riding situation. At FOCUS, we also use shocks that are specially tailo- red to the wheel, in order to tease the ultimate in per- formance from our bikes.

T.E.C. TAILORED ENERGY CONCEPT ALWAYS AS MUCH ENERGY AS YOU NEED

Uncompromising. At FOCUS, the ride characteristics are the top priority. The new SHIMANO STEPS MTB generation of motors enabled the FOCUS engineers to develop a Tailored Energy Concept to suit your needs. The energy concept offers you an adjustable battery capacity of up to 756 Wh – cleverly distribu- ted over two equally powerful batteries. You choose the battery features that suit your requirements. With the Tailored Energy Concept (T.E.C.), there are three possi- bilities available to you. Either you ride along as many trails as possible with only the beautifully integrated battery, and make the most of the benefits of a low centre of gravity and outstanding handling. Or you expand your SQUARED EXPERIENCE to include an additionally available battery (T.E.C. Pack). It can be fitted with ease and allows you to ride up and down trails even more often. You can also use an adapter (Smart Rack) to practically attach a bottle cage and equipment instead of the T.E.C. Pack.

C.I.A COMFORT IMPROVING AREAS

As well as the seat stay offsetting thesemovements, your movement is also absorbed by the special design of the seat tube. At the same time, the butted tube shape in the transition to the bottom bracket increases the stiffness of the bracket, thus ensu- ring optimum power transmission. Thanks to the interaction of these key areas, the frame absorbs the acting forces and offers sig- nificantly enhanced comfort. But we haven‘t just optimised the tube cross-section – we have desi- gned the seat stay and chainstay so that they are concavely braced towards the rear triangle, which further enhances absorption of the vertically acting forces.

BIKES WITH C.I.A. RAVEN, PARALANE

GREATER COMFORT MEANS LESS FATIGUE

We are continuously developing new solutions for the perfect riding experience. Comfort has a considerable influence on the ride charac- teristics of your bike and significantly impacts your riding experience. In order to optimise that comfort, the FOCUS engineers have developed C.I.A. technology. Thanks to years of frame analyses, we have been able to identify and optimise key comfort points of the frameset, the so-called Comfort Improving Areas (C.I.A.). Out and about on your bike, particularly on rough terrain, your bike and subsequently your body are subjected to constant vertical forces. Compensating these vertical forces takes energy and depletes reserves you may need later during your ride. Our FOCUS engineers carried out finite element analyses (FEA) in order to find out how, and exactly where, these forces affect the frame and how the design of the frame could be adapted to increase comfort. This saw the development of not only com- fort-enhancing tube cross-sections and forms, but also special frame designs capable of deflecting those forces and ensuring a smooth ride even on uneven ground. KEY FACTOR – TUBE CROSS-SECTIONS The forces caused by the terrain need to be absor- bed by the rear triangle of the bike frame, which means the rear triangle needs to offer greater ver- tical flexibility. The three key areas are located at the seat stay, the chainstay and the seat tube. In the course of these analyses, it became clear that the optimum cross-section of the tubes in all three areas need to be as flat and as elliptical as possible.

The following images show the three areas and their unique tube cross-sections:

The cross-sections of the chainstay become increasingly flatter towards the dropouts. This en- ables optimum absorption by the frame of any ver- tical forces from uneven surfaces.

Because vertical forces from uneven surfaces af- fect the rider too, your movements also need to be offset by the frame set, as otherwise your body‘s attempts to compensate these forces would simil- arly speed up the onset of fatigue. The central flat- tening of the seat stay absorbs these movements. The frame absorbs the forces, thus keeping you fresh and strong for longer.

R.A.T. RAPID AXLE TECHNOLOGY

BIKES WITH R.A.T. RAVEN, FOCUS O1E, IZALCO MAX, IZALCO RACE, PARALANE, MARES

FASTER, SIMPLER, SAFER

Disc brakes are both the present and future in cycling – and for their optimum function, floating axles are a must. Because no floating axle on the market met the demands that we place on a thru-axle system, our FOCUS engineers were galvanised into acti- on and developed the Rapid Axle Technology (R.A.T.) – the fastest floating axle in the world. Disc brakes require the stiffness and stability of a floating axle to ensure optimum function. Because no thru-axle system met our wheel change speed requirements, however, we developed our own patented Rapid Axle Technology (R.A.T.) for mountain bikes, racing bikes and Cyclo Cross bikes. Our development of the R.A.T. floating axle focussed on a quick and easy wheel change. As a result, Rapid Axle Technology combines the stability and stiff- ness of a floating axle and all the advantages of a quick-release device. As the quickest and easiest wheel change system on the market, it puts even classic quick-release devices in the shade. Thanks to its outstanding features, even renowned competitors now rely on the R.A.T. thru-axle system for their disc models. PROVEN IN THE RACING FIELD The XC World Cup in Albstadt in 2016 demonstrated just how suc- cessfully our development goals were implemented. FOCUS XC team mechanic Fabian Haug changed the rear wheel of Florian Vogel‘s RAVEN in 13.3 seconds – an unofficial world record! The wheel change took a whole five seconds off the reigning record. The simple operation of the R.A.T. floating axle enables an in- tuitive wheel change, even in stressful situations – such as bike racing.

The advantages of Rapid Axle Technology: Abrasion-free alignment of the disc in the brake body | Ultra-quick wheel change | Excellent stiffness
