Pritchard, Dr. Pike and others were also well educated, and they were among the leaders and early faculty members of the school. However, the school was not started for the purpose of giving collegiate work, but for giving a thorough training in the Word of God to prepare "lay leaders" who would go back to their churches after their course at Biola and assist pastors and become leaders in their local churches. The design of the school was such that during WWI and following WWI, mission leaders became anxious to get Biola graduates to serve as missionaries under their Boards on the foreign field, because of the thorough training in the Word of God.
