awards totalling J$5,892,419.54 were made to academic staff. Assistance to staff included funding to purchase equipment/supplies to conduct research, to attend international conferences, and for the publication of books and journal articles. A total of J$70,000 was granted to The UWI Mona Library to assist with The UWI 3MT (Three Minute Thesis) competition. • Funds totalling J$2,716,196.80 were also allocated for support of other research related activities, including departmental allocations. Other Awards: • Showcasing FHE research The Deputy Dean for Graduate Matters in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Dr. Carmel Roofe, spearheaded the showcasing of research output by staff in the Faculty at two events. She presented one entitled “A Collage of Research in the Faculty of Humanities and Education”, at a webinar hosted by the Mona Office of Research and Innovation on March 3, 2022. The presentation focused on outputs achieved during the 2019-2021 period, challenges encountered, opportunities derived, and lessons learnt. The presentation was well-received and the Faculty was commended for the research work being done. The second event was the first Humanities and Education Day, which took the form of a

virtual research symposium showcasing research by academics and graduate students. The event was held on May 13, 2022 under the theme “Keep Calm and Research: Recognizing Human Creativity and Caribbean Responsiveness in Problematic Times”. Ten presentations featuring published and ongoing projects were showcased. These were organised as individual and panel presentations with moderation by FHE graduate students. The event organised by three Deputy Deans of FHE, was well supported and had over 87 participants. Participants included all categories of staff at The UWI and scholars from the USA, Canada, and the wider Caribbean. Feedback from academics in FHE suggests that this was an excellent initiative, and that the team should explore making this a calendar event. Efforts were also made to enhance the capacity for grant acquisition, through the offering of a two-day grant writing seminar attended by eight staff members. Following the seminar, a small team of five drafted a proposal, and it is hoped that the team will re-engage the process in the upcoming academic year. 8.2 RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS Institutional Research Professor David Tennant, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, led two research teams as they embarked on institutional research projects aimed at providing critical information to guide decision-making in the Faculty, and at producing publishable research output. • A Research Productivity survey was designed to collect information on the research productivity of academics in the Faculties of Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. The survey results will be used to determine the factors that impact research productivity, as well as inform the design of interventions aimed at increasing research productivity in the two Faculties. The survey results were analysed in the 2021-2022 academic year and presented to the Senior Management Team (SMT). Based on the recommendation of the SMT, the study was extended to the entire Campus and circulated to the other Faculties. • Institutional data on UWI undergraduate students were collated to provide information on the profile of the students, and the determinants of performance.

The Faculty also hosted seminars geared toward increasing the research productivity of staff members. These included: • The Caribbean Journal of Social Work: New Authors’ Presentations on January 25, 2022, and February 1, 2022

Times Higher Education Ranking The ranking results for 2022, released by the Times Higher Education (THE) in early September 2021, revealed that The UWI soared within the scales moving up a very impressive 94 places. From the global field of some 30,000 universities and elite research institutes, The UWI now stands in the top 1.5%, up from 3% in the prior year. In the current World University rankings, only 1,668 universities from 99 countries satisfied the eligibility criteria of the THE. These 1,668 elite universities are ranked under five pillars of excellence: [1] teaching and learning; [2] research; [3] scholarly and professional citations; [4] industry income; and [5] international outlook and participation. Results are validated by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The UWI’s robust comparative performance was driven by improved results in teaching and learning, research and professional citations, and global outlook and participation. We are grateful for the outstanding efforts of our staff who, despite the ongoing challenges, continue to contribute meaningful and relevant research to local and international development agendas. Areas of concern which were flagged, and identified for improvement remain constant - insufficient private sector investment in research, and volatility in government funding that raises questions with respect to the enterprise’s financial sustainability. These areas are placed at the centre of strategic planning for the next five-year period. Publication Data The Departmental Reports provide important information on staff productivity in the faculties and units. Each report identifies research output in peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed publications comprising books, book chapters, journal articles, technical reports, and conference presentations (posters and/or papers). In addition, supplementary information is provided on public-service activities such as seminars, lectures, workshops, engagement with the media, and membership on boards and committees.
